Itinerary:

The North Georgia mountains may not be the Rockies (or the Himalayas), but they include many peaks that make for superb hiking and offer incredible views.   For this series, we are counting down the tallest mountains in GA.

#9 - Double Spring Knob

Also commonly known as "Kelly" knob, Double Spring Knob is 4280' above sea level with 920' of clean prominence.    It is actually tied with #8 Coosa Bald as far as elevation goes, but it has less prominence, so that's why it falls below it on the list.

Most all of our hike will be along the AT (Appalachian Trail).  We begin at Dicks Creek Gap and it's a good climb of about 2000 feet over 5 miles to the top...see elevation profile below for more details

The actual summit of Double Springs is just off of the AT, so if you want to get to the very top, a little light "bushwhacking" will be required...just about 2/10 of a mile and up about 120ft.  The TLs will certainly do this and it shouldn't be difficult at all on this terrain.  But it is optional for the rest of the group.

On the way back down, we will take a side trail to check out the Deep Gap AT Shelter...just a half mile round trip out of the way.

We should be treated to some nice fall colors on this hike, and hopefully some crisp, cool mid-Oct weather.

Summary:
- Total distance: ~10.3 mi
- Total ascent: ~2000 feet.
- Pace - moderate
