Itinerary:

Join us on an EPIC ADVENTURE in the Canadian Rockies!

We will be exploring Banff, Yoho and Jasper National Parks while maximizing our time above the tree line and away from the crowds. Vistas, Glaciers, Waterfalls and awe inspiring views will be our goal every day and we have an itinerary overwhelm your senses! If you love adventure, are a STRONG hiker and are willing to challenge yourself to new heights, this is the ADVENTURE you have been waiting for.

The Trip

Saturday: Arrive in Calgary (by TBD o'clock), pack up the minivans and head to Canmore for our first of two locations. It is about a 90 minute drive, when the mountains come into view you will know the fun is about to start.

Sunday: Cirque Peak via Helen Lake Trail and Dolomite Pass (13 miles/4.5k,D6). The Paradise Valley Trail required too many buses and crowds, this mind blowing hike will be an excellent substitute. We will hike to Helen Lake on a gentle uphill and then begin a steep ascent and scramble to Cirque Peak that will bring us 360 views and a time for lunch. On the way down we will detour to Dolomite Pass for another dose of awesome!

Monday: Iceline Trail Loop (13 miles/3k, D5). A day in Yoho National Park will be long remembered and the Iceline trail is our ticket to adventure! This trail has a steep climb and quick access to mind blowing views of glaciers, waterfalls and alpine fields. Yoho NP is known for its' concentration of jagged peaks and glacial moraines and the Iceline trail is the best way to take it all in. The trailhead is quite large and about 90 minutes from Canmore.

Tuesday: Mount Bourgeau Trail (15 miles/5k, D6). Bourgeau Lake, Harvey Pass and Mt. Bourgeau will fill our day with AWE!  Another day, another epic trail... we enjoy our last full day in Banff NP. For those with sore legs, Harvey Pass makes an excellent turn around point, For those who are up to the challenge, a 1500 foot ascent will reward us with unbeatable views!

Wednesday: Icefield Parkway (5-7 miles). Today is a travel day to Jasper NP, but never fear the Icefield Parkway has many sights to see and we will be stopping at several of the headliners for short hikes to view Glaciers, Waterfalls and alpine lakes. After our drive we will settle in to our second basecamp in the town of Jasper.

Thursday:Verdant Pass (14 miles/3k, D5). The meadows at Verdant Pass are HUGE and will be full of wildflowers! But that is not all... The views are outstanding and will give us a great look at the majesty of Jasper NP. Once we get to the pass we will be wandering off trail to take in the meadows and the views.

Friday: Sulphur Skyline (5 miles/2k, D4). Our legs will get a well deserved break today, but our senses will not! This trail is well traveled for good reason, once at the peak the views of the Fiddle Valley will remind us of why we came on this adventure. After the hike, a quick dip in the Miette Hot Springs will make our trip weary legs feel alive again. After the hike, the group will drive back to Calgary (with a stop in Banff or Canmore for dinner).

Saturday: Sadly our trip has come to an end and we will fly back to ATL.

Lodging

Our first four nights will be in a very nice VRBO in Canmore. It is a large house (2600 sq. ft.) that easily sleeps 10 people. There are 5 bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms. We picked this property to ensure everyone has their own bed. To sleep 10 people with different beds, this will mean that some people will get beds and 2 people will get a sofa bed and 2 people an air mattress. Trip leaders will be assigned a bedroom. After that it will be based upon time of sign up and possibly the mix of male and females. We will try to have genders together for the beds not in the bedrooms. Also the sharing of bathrooms by gender may influence the arrangements. The Trip Leaders will assign sleeping quarters prior to the trip start date. All hikers will be paying the same rate regardless of sleeping arrangement (included in the trip cost). The house has a gourmet kitchen and a dining area spacious enough for all of us to prepare our lunches and snacks and make and eat breakfast. The house is within walking distance to restaurants, shops and bars and has stunning mountain views.

Our accomodation for 2 nights in Jasper is in a motel style hotel. We have 5 rooms reserved each with two queen beds. Once we see our male/female mix of who signs up, we may be able to tweak the reservations to suit depending upon availability. The hotel has a restaurant for dinner/breakfast and a store for sundries. It is also within walking distance to town with more dining options.

Friday night lodging back in Calgary in preparation for your flight home is booked on your own. There are numerous hotels near the airport for a good price. Once we have a full roster, we will give options for a couple of hotels. It will be easier if everyone stays at the same location to avoid too many drop offs. However, once the car is dropped off, there should be plenty of hotel shuttles from the airport to the hotels. There is also an in terminal Marriot hotel. It is a little more expensive than some, but very affordable if shared.

Transportation

All participants will book their own flights, but be sure to arrive by TBD o'clock as we have two minivans to whisk us away. If you will be arriving late, you will be responsible for obtaining a shuttle to Canmore to meet the group.

The Group

We are looking for fellow adventure seekers that are STRONG hikers with low-drama personalities. A total of 10 people will be allowed on the trip. All AOC members are welcome to sign up, we will be selecting the group based on the following criteria:

  • When you sign up
  • Strength of hiking experience
  • Activity in the club
  • Low drama personality
  • Fit within the group dynamic

At signup time you will initially be placed on the waiting list. The group will be selected based on the above criteria and you will be added to the active roster and be given a link with which to pay. Once the attendee roster is published, we will give a time frame for attendees to pay.

Failure to pay within the given timeframe will result in your removal from the active roster.

The date of July 2022 allows us to switch out anybody who has to drop the event.
