Itinerary:

This another in the Summit Sunset Series where we will enjoy sunsets from some of the finest scenic viewpoints in GA...all on or near mountain peaks.  If you've never had this experience, you don't know what you're missing, so time to find out...

We usually do this particular hike as a D4, but we'll make it a D3 today and just go with a more relaxed pace.   It will be more of a social hike (vs a fitness hike) and we'll keep the group together for the most part.  The total ascent is about 1500 feet, which is significant, especially with nearly all of it coming in the first 2.5 mi.   But it's a fairly steady uphill with only a couple of steeper sections....nothing that intense if you are in pretty good shape.   This is not a beginner hike, but intermediate hikers will do just fine.

Our route up will mostly be on the main trail until we head up a side trail and around the exposed rock of the western face of the mtn.  If the rock is wet, we will stick to a trail that runs parallel to the edge and we can still step out and enjoy the numerous overlooks.

On the way up, we will take a short side trip to "The Boulder", and enjoy the nice view from there before heading higher to the actual summit, a peaceful grassy clearing surrounded by a ring of trees.

We will then view the sunset (at 7:18) from a rocky overlook, and head down 5-15 min afterwards.   This trail is fairly easy to follow and the TL has hiked down it at night numerous times. But be sure to bring a headlamp or flashlight . We are going to take our time heading down as the trail is rocky in parts and we want to be safe.  But it should only take us about an hour to descend.

Drive time back from the trailhead is just about 70 min, so we should be back to the carpool between 9:30 and 10pm.

Totals:
Distance ~4.5 miles
Total ascent: ~1500 feet

PLEASE NOTE:

  • the last .4 mi of the drive to the trailhead is on a gravel road.
  • If rain is forecast, the event will be rescheduled.
