Note: This is an "EXPLORATORY" trip. This means that there are parts of this trip, or perhaps the whole trip, that is new to your Trip Leader(s). However, they are confident that this will not be an issue.
This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.
Join me as we enjoy the Sope Creek and Cochran Shoals CRNA areas.
We will begin at the Sope Creek Parking lot and head down to the ruins. I have never crossed the bridge before to look at the ruins on the other side, so we will very carefully traverse the road bridge over the creek and check out the ruins on the other side. I have allocated some time for photos.
After this we will come back across the bridge and head to Sibley Pond, then weave through the many trails into Cochran Shoals. Once in Cochran Shoals we will head through the trails over the swampy boardwalk to the main river path where we will go all the way to Akers Mill.
We will be on hiking trails, bike trails and asphalt so consider your footwear.
We will then head back taking some of the same and some different trails and head back to the parked cars.
Why is this exploratory? Even though I know these trails well, I want to increase my usual D2 6 mile hike to a D3 9 ish mile hike for those wishing to do more miles. I will be exploring the routes as we go.
If you sign up, be prepared to finish 15 minutes either side of the published finish time and also accept we may be closer to 8 miles or we may be closer to 10 miles as we weave through the many walking and biking trails this beautiful area has.
This is not a beginners hike. We will keep up an aggresive 3mph + for the duration of the hike. This hike will probably offer about 700 ft of elevation change, so a fast pace should be very manageable.
This hike ended up being 10.5 miles with 1400 feet of elevation gain and a fast pace of 3.3 mph. It was upgraded to a D4.
