We have Gary's blessing to do his Friday hikes at Rottenwood Creek whenever the mood strikes us - - while he's going his 1000 mile trek on the Appalacian Trail.
This event is considered an urban hike because it's totally on a cement path. No briars, mud, rocks, or stumps to worry about. No poles needed. So good running shoes or sneakers are an appropriate choice for footwear.
Gary has set up this hike to be fast - between 3.5 to 3.7 mph while we're moving. Extra time is added to make stops when we see something interesting along the trail, such as a heron, deer, intereting graffiti, or pretty flowers.
Elevation gain is about 300 feet, with one long hill and a few shorter ones that follow soon after. (Gary calls it one hill with a few knobs - - but I see it differently!)
There's a $5 parking fee at this lot if you don't have an annual CRNRA pass or an America the Beautiful pass. Payment can be made at the kiosk using your smartphone, or you can purchase a pass online in advance at https://www.nps.gov/chat/planyourvisit/fees.htm .
|How to Get There:|
On Google Maps, type in Paces Mill Boat Ramp (Be careful! Other GPS programs will take you to the wrong place.)
This lot is at the end of the Chattahoochee River Bridge on Cobb Parkway.
Let's park BEHIND the bathrooms in the shaded lot (if there's room).
Bathrooms are available at the parking lot.
Parking is $5, payable with your smartphone at the lot or in advance at https://www.nps.gov/chat/planyourvisit/fees.htm
