Itinerary:

View from the top of Blood Mountain(Note that this trip is completely separate from the Blood Mountain sunset hike on the same day.)

We'll start the hike at the Byron Herbert Reece Trailhead and hike 0.7 miles to the Gap and pick up the Freeman Trail which goes around Blood Mountain following the contour of the mountain to Bird Gap. From Bird Gap we'll turn right on the Appalachian Trail and start the final part of the climb to the summit of Blood Mountain. (GA's highest point on the AT) We'll take time to explore the summit and have lunch. We'll resume by following the AT north back to the Byron Herbert Reece Trailhead. The total distance of the hike will be 7.2 Miles and should take 4 hours.

After the hike, some of us will head to the nearby Wolf Mountain Vineyard for an optional wine tasting. The tasting room has beautiful vineyard and mountain views. The tasting costs $10 without tip. There is no dress code, but you'll feel more comfortable if you bring some spare clothes. Jeans and fleece are fine.

If it is a clear day we should have some great 360 degree views at our lunch spot on Blood Mountain. About half of this hike will be along the Appalachian Trail.

You should be in fairly good shape to do this hike as the elevation gain is over 1400 ft. If you are new to hiking in the mountains please e-mail one of the trip leaders to make sure this is the right hike for you.

Carpool Cost: Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $58.00 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Notes:

Are dogs permitted? Yes, but only a limited number. They should be well behaved and be able to go 7 miles. Please e-mail the trip leader if you plan to bring your dog.

Will this event occur rain or shine? We will cancel the hike if it looks like there will be medium to heavy rains. I’ll e-mail everyone the day before the hike about the current status.

We will group people together at the carpool according to their preference for attending the optional wine tasting. The wine tasting will involve only light consumption, due to the hard hike and the drive home.

* We encourage all members to follow our Etiquette Guidelines while participating in AOC events.

Cancellation/Partial Attendance:   Please review the AOC cancellation policy.
