Itinerary:

The North Georgia mountains may not be the Rockies (or the Himalayas), but they include many peaks that make for superb hiking and offer incredible views.   For this series, we are counting down the tallest mountains in GA.

#2 - Rabun Bald

Standing 4696' above sea level with 1016 feet of clean prominence, Rabun Bald is the 2nd tallest in GA...the observation platform at the top provides one of the best views in the state...you can see Tray mtn, Mt Yonah, Big Scaly Mtn, Standing Indian and many other GA/NC/SC peaks.

This hike serves not only as part of the Summit series but also part 3 of the GA's Bartram Trail series, the rest of which will be hopefully be completed soon.

We will start at Warwoman Dell picnic area where we'll jump on the Bartram   We'll hike by Becky Branch Falls and the larger more impressive Martins Creek Fals.   Then it is some rolling terrain as we slowly gain in elevation over the 13 miles to the summit of Rabun Bald.  The gaps are not that deep, so hopefully that won't add too much total ascent to the trip.

There is an excellent overlook near Flat Top Mtn and then of course the views from the top of Rabun Bald, where we'll take a long break before recollecting the group and heading down  together for the last four miles.  There's a good chance we'll finish in the dark so bring your headlamp or a good flashlight.

Summary:
Warwoman picnic area to Hale Ridge Road via Bartram Trail: ~18 miles

Total ascent:  approx 4300+'

PLEASE NOTE:

  • If rain is forecast, this hike will be rescheduled for a future date.
  • If you have not very recently completed some tough AOC hikes, we will be contacting you to determine your level of fitness and experience and if this is the right hike for you.
  • This hike involves a car shuttle...a relatively long one of about 40 min one way.   So that will be a drawback, but it's the only way to do this section going north.
