Itinerary:

We’ll go trekking on the NC Appalachian Trail (AT) between the very scenic Siler Bald and the Wayah Bald. The high altitude beautiful NC mountain vista makes the longer driving worthwhile for our visit.

We’ll meet and start from the Wayah Gap parking area at ~4,200 feet. This is a very small parking area just off the side of Wayah Road/ NC-1310. When we come from Franklin NC, it is on the left side of the road.

Do NOT drive to the Wayah Bald Parking Area where the Wayah Bald Observation Tower is located.

We’ll take the AT South Bound (SOBO) first to the Siler Bald standing at 5,216 feet. We’ll take a break at this massive grassy bald with panoramic wide open mountain views. After the break we’ll take the AT NOBO back to our cars where we’ll complete the first 4 miles of the day.

We’ll then cross the road and take the AT NOBO climbing up the hill of Wine Spring Bald. We’ll continue along the ridge to Wayah Bald standing at 5,342 feet. We’ll take a longer break at the Wayah Bald Observation Tower to fully enjoy its beautiful surroundings and the amazing mountain views. After the break we’ll follow the AT SOBO to get back to our cars.

The event duration does NOT include our travelling/ driving time. If you’re going to meet at the event, please arrive 10 minutes before our starting time. Our duration time is an educated estimate, so we need to have some flexibility.

<<< Important Notes >>>

Please only register if you are comfortable going long distance at a pace averaging 2.5 mph in the remote mountains environment, and have solid D5 experience. A good reference is you can comfortably finish Kennesaw 10 in less than 4 hours.

If your recent experience is not from the club, please include it in a note when you register, or email TL; otherwise you will be moved to the waiting list for the safety of everyone. We encourage our members to actively participate with joyful experience, and most importantly to stay healthy and safe at the end of our event.
