Itinerary:

The Mount Yonah trail is one of the best hikes in GA, with superb views of Blood Mtn, Cowrock Mtn, Brasstown Bald, Tray Mtn, etc.   It's also just a unique hike with a lot of variety.....you have the woodsy portions and then the boulder strewn section and then the exposed rocky areas near the top.

We will begin by hiking up the main Yonah trail, taking our time and enjoying the views on the way up. The hike will cover approximately 5 miles and gain approximately 1500 feet in elevation. It does involve some rocky terrain and a couple of moderately steep sections so you should have some decent leg strength.  We plan to keep a moderate but comfortable pace.  This will not be a race to the top, but more enjoy the scenery along the way type of hike.  This is a D4 hike though, so please be aware and up to the challenge.

We should be able to view a beautiful sunset from the near the summit and then witness the alignment of the moon and Mars in the East after 6:30pm.  Hopefully we'll even spot some meteors from the Quadrantid meteor shower.  There will be a waxing crescent moon this night and the views should be spectacular!  Quadrantid meteors are described as bright and bluish with long silvery trains.

Quadrantid meteor shower
The meteors are named after the obsolete constellation Quadrans Muralis, the Mural or Wall Quadrant (an astronomical instrument), depicted in some 19th-century star atlases roughly midway between the end of the handle of the Big Dipper and the quadrilateral of stars marking the head of the constellation Draco.
