Itinerary:

Let’s hike Kennesaw!

We’ll start at the Visitor’s Center and hike 6.4 miles out and back over Kennesaw Mountain, Little Kennesaw Mountain, and Pigeon Hill.  That’s six climbs for a total elevation gain of a little over 1600 feet.

The terrain navigation is mixed with some dirt trails, paved paths, rocky forest, and wide, grooved granite outcrops.  The views near the summit extend to the distant skyline of Atlanta and possibly Stone Mountain.

While this hike is scenic, it is not leisurely or for beginners.  If you don't start with me and finish in the allotted time frame, you WILL NOT get credit for the hike! Strong experience with D3 hikes and above is highly recommended.  In contrast to most AOC hikes, this is a self paced hike.  We will probably spread out based on your level of experience, but you should be prepared to hike at a moderate to fast pace in order to complete this hike in 2.5 hours.

Here is our route:

https://www.alltrails.com/explore/recording/morning-hike-643de7c--150

We will start promptly so plan to arrive a little early to check in and meet the group.

You can either park at the new visitor parking lot on old US Hwy 41 or in the main visitor's center parking lot. Allow a few minutes to walk from old US 41 parking lot to the visitor's center if you park there.

This fee can be paid for online at recreation.gov, at the automated fee machine located at the Old Hwy 41 parking area, or at the Visitor Center between 9 am and 5 pm daily. Purchases can be made with card only, no cash accepted.

Notes:

Did You Know?

“This is hallowed ground. For two terrible weeks in the summer of 1864, thousands of Americans fought and bled and died here. Honor their sacrifices. Walk reverently in their footsteps. The fierce struggle they waged here not only helped decide the outcome of America’s Civil War. It shaped the fate of a nation, and the destiny of generations yet unborn.”

Today Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield preserves the locations of and commemorates the major events associated with the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain. It is the only National Park Service property that commemorates the Atlanta Campaign.
