Itinerary:

This series of hikes is designed to celebrate the beautiful collection of parks that we have in "our own backyard”, the Chattahoochee National Recreation Area. Administered by the National Park Service, the Chatt NRA offers miles of scenic trails, picturesque river views, and sightings of aquatic wildlife.

While the AOC frequently offers hikes at many of these parks, I thought it would be fun to hike all the branches, starting from the most northern (Bowmans Island) to the most southern (West Palisades).

Chatt NRA North to South thread

Part 13: West Palisades

Ok time to complete this series and we are doing it with the last three hikes in one day.  So sign up for more than one if you'd like to get some extra miles in.

To finish things up, we have West Palisades.  This park offers some decent little hills, lots of river views and should provide a perfect setting for a fun late afternoon hike.  Even though we have to start out on a paved trail, (always a bit of a buzzkill), we head up into the woods before long and will try to explore most of the park. 

This is a D3 event, just because it involves some very light "scrambling", as we will hike north along the river to just beyond the park boundary...it's nothing major and should add a small bit of adventure to the hike.  The park closes 30 minutes after sunset, which is 6:08.  We'll try to time it so we can enjoy the sunset...we won't have a direct view but will enjoy the golden hues on the treetops and the fading light over the river.

Total distance should be about 5 miles and pace will be moderate.

    Directions

    From I-285 East

    • Take exit 19 U.S. 41 (Cobb Parkway)
    • South 1.5 miles to the unit entrance on right, just beyond the BP Service Station. Do not cross the Chattahoochee.

    From I-285 West

    • Take exit 20 U.S. 41(Cobb Parkway)
    • South 1.5 miles to the unit entrance on right, just beyond the BP Service Station. Do not cross the Chattahoochee.

    From I-75 North

    • Take Exit 25, Mt.. Paran Road.
    • Left on Mt.. Paran Road to U.S. 41 (Cobb Parkway). Turn right on U.S. 41 for 1 mile cross the Chattahoochee and take an immediate left onto entrance road.

    From I-75 South

    • Take Exit 25, Mt.. Paran Road.
    • Right on Mt.. Paran Road to U.S. 41 (Cobb Parkway). Turn right on U.S. 41 for 1 mile cross the Chattahoochee and take an immediate left onto entrance road.
