This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.

Itinerary:

Here's a different twist for hiking Tray Mountain which eliminates the climb over Rocky Mountain. We'll enjoy a nice trek up Tray Mountain and the beautiful views it offers near its summit. (Credit to Ron Jacobs for the event description and route.)

We'll start at Andrews Cove Campground and hike two miles up the Andrews Cove Trail to intersect the Appalachian Trail around Indian Grave Gap. Turning right, we'll head NOBO up the AT to summit Tray Mountain and make our way to an overlook to view the gorgeous long range panorama and eat lunch. We'll also hike to the Tray Mountain shelter before starting our descent. Retracing our steps to the cars will be all downhill.

The hike is approximately 10 miles, with 2,800 elevation gain.

This is a challenging D5 mountain trek. You'll need recent D5 or equivalent hiking experience and be comfortable moving at a moderate pace of 2.5 mph. If you don't have recent D5 or higher hikes with the AOC then the trip leader will contact you to determine whether this event is right for you.
