Itinerary:

Enjoy beautiful fall views from Ramrock Mountain and the Appalachian Trail!  From Woody Gap we'll take the AT southbound, traverse around the slopes of Black Mountain, and after about 1.5 miles we achieve the summit of Ramrock Mountain. The trail descends to Jack's Gap, then climbs to Gooch Gap at about mile 3.7.  Leaving leaving Gooch Gap the trail crosses the gravel Cooper Gap road, then wanders through a beautiful old growth forest of oaks and tulip poplars.  At mile 5.2 we'll be on the lookout for a blue- blazed side trail, leading northwest to the Gooch Mountain Shelter, where we'll take a break for snacks.  After lunch, it's back the way we came.

We'll maintain a moderate pace and allow for scenic breaks.  The trail has some challenging climbs, with a cumulative elevation gain of about 2000 feet.  There are pit toilets at Woody Gap and at Gooch Mountain Shelter.
