Itinerary:

Let's enjoy a morning hike at Stone Mountain! This D4 trek features the Walkup Trail to the summit, followed by the Cherokee Trail loop around the mountain, followed by a second trip up to the summit.

We'll meet near the Historical & Environmental Center (formerly Confederate Hall), over by the restrooms next to Walkup Trail at 8:20 am. Our hike will first take us up the Walkup Trail to the top of the mountain. We'll enjoy fabulous views of Atlanta, northern Georgia and the surrounding areas. Next we'll head back down to the intersection of the Walkup Trail and the Cherokee Trail. We will turn left onto the Cherokee Trail and hike counterclockwise around the mountain. We'll pass through forests, by lakes and creeks, and take a short but scenic detour onto Kings Island/Kings Trail. Swinging around the mountain, we'll continue on the Cherokee Trail where it makes its final ascent to terminate at the Walkup Trail, and then turn left to head upward for a second trip to the very top. After enjoying a final panoramic view from Stone Mountain's summit, we will descend the Walkup Trail, returning to our cars.

We'll hike at a moderate pace (between 2.5 and 2.7 mph moving speed) and stop three or four times for short breaks (no lunch stop). This hike is 9 miles with 1,600 feet elevation gain, placing it on the low end of the D4 difficulty range.

Recent D3 or greater hiking experiences is required to join the fun. If you haven't done a D3+ hike with the AOC recently then the trip leader will contact you to determine if this event is appropriate.
