Itinerary:

OVERVIEW:  Many Atlanta outdoor buffs may be unaware that our four Metro Atlanta REI stores offer a wide variety of FREE clinics in subjects ranging from basic hiking, backpacking & camping tips to bicycling, paddling, climbing, skiing, etc.  In the interest of increasing our AOC members' backpacking knowledge and skills I have obtained ten confirmed reservations for an AOC subgroup consisting of myself and up to nine other members & guests to attend this indoor REI clinic this Sunday afternoon at the REI Atlanta store.  After gathering near the front of the store at 1:45 PM, introducing one another, and signing our AOC waiver forms we'll join the REI presenter and other clinic attendees in the presentation room at 2:00 PM near the back of the store.  Below is the recent REI promo material for the event:

PACK LIGHT, PACK RIGHT!  "Is your pack too heavy? Would you like to know how to pack lightly but still be comfortable and perhaps even have room for a few extras? An REI backpacking expert will provide tips for reducing pack weight without sacrificing product performance or overall comfort. "Pack Light, Pack Right" reflects the continuing evolution of the light-gear concept. Learn how the latest technology and materials are being used to create products that are among the lightest on the market, while maintaining comfort, function and durability. Clinic topics will include clothing, backpacks, shelters, sleep systems, cooking equipment & supplies, and food choices."

FOR FUTURE FREE REI CLINICS:  If you would like to make an online personal reservation, you can check availability and reserve your spot as follows:
1) Go to REI.com
2) Click on "Store Locator" in the upper right corner of the home page and choose your Store of interest from the pop-up menus that appear.
3) Click on the free Clinic of interest,
4) Fill in the online Reservation form and submit (may require your REI member number—costs only about $10 for a lifetime membership).
5) If you fail to make a formal reservation, walk-ins at these clinics are also usually acceptable.

By the way, a FREE "Rock Climbing Basics" clinic will be offered at the same REI Atlanta Store next Tuesday evening, Feb 23, at 7:00 PM.

(See A & B approach options below.)  The store's phone number is 404-633-6508.

A) If you take Exit #91 from I-85 southbound (e.g. from Spaghetti Junction) continue straight ahead from the exit traffic light (at Clairmont Rd) and stay in the right lane of the access road to reach the store 0.5 mile ahead.
B) If you take Exit #91 from I-85 northbound (e.g. from midtown Atlanta), get in the far left lane before reaching Clairmont Rd, which will loop you onto the southbound access road without any traffic lights. (Then bear right to stay on the access road and reach the store.)
