Itinerary:

Some of the most scenic mountain vistas I've enjoyed in the SE are in the Southern Nantahala's from Standing Indian. We'll start at 2800' elevation, and climb up to Standing Indian at 5500'. The total elevation gain will be close to 2700'. However from Case Knife Gap at 4720' we will go off trail up about 600' in a 1/3 of a mile. That's steep, and it feels more like crawling at times. But then we're back on well formed trails, including a stretch on the famous A.T.

Once we take a breather, we will go on up to Standing Indian for lunch. After enjoying the peak for at least 30 minutes, we'll continue on the A.T. to Deep Gap. Deep Gap Branch is a steep trail at times, so you'll have to be agile on your feet, with good gripping foot wear. Since this is the last portion of the hike, you'll want to be fit enough to be light of foot for the duration. It's not a good test to see if you can hike 10 miles in the mountains. It's better suited for people who can hike in mountain terrain most of the day, and still be enjoying the views right up until the end.
