Itinerary:

Join me as I enjoy two epic hikes in the Great Smoky Mountains this June. Let's escape the heat of Atlanta and head to the beautiful, high elevation mountains where the temperatures are cooler and the views are spectacular!

(1) Saturday's hike: Mt. Cammerer via Cosby Campground

*********************************************

The trail to Mt. Cammerer offers both creekside and ridgeline views, along with spectacular fire tower views at our destination.

We will meet at the Cosby Campground parking lot at 8:50 am, near the Lower Mt. Cammerer Trailhead. Click here for trailhead locationAfter introductions we'll start hiking at 9:00 am. We follow Lower Mt. Cammer Trail for a short distance until intersecting Low Gap Trail, where we turn right. Proceeding along Low Gap Trail, we'll head uphill for almost 3 miles, following Cosby Creek much of the way as we ascend 2,000 feet. This brings us to an intersection with the white-blazed Appalachian Trail at Low Gap. We'll turn left to head northbound on the AT for another 2.6 miles, enjoying ridgeline views along the way while adding another 800 feet elevation. We'll veer away from the AT for the final 0.5 miles to access the amazing stone fire tower on top of Mount Cammerer. We'll enjoy lunch at the fire tower while we take in the magnificent views. After lunch we will retrace our steps for a fun downhill return to Cosby.

This hike is a challenging D5 mountain trek with 3,200 feet of ascent over 12 miles. You'll need recent D5 or equivalent hiking experience and be comfortable moving at a moderate pace of over 2.5 mph. If you don't have recent D5 or higher hiking experience with the AOC I will contact you to determine whether this event is right for you.

I will be staying in the area this weekend on a family trip, so I won't be able to offer a carpool from Atlanta. Due to the early start times I encourage participants to spend the night nearby. There are many accomodation options nearby, ranging from tent camping to hotels to cabins.

NOTE: As of March 2023 GSMNP now charges a $5 daily fee for parking. Click here for more information on parking fees and payment options.
