Itinerary:

The Coosa Backcountry Loop is a staple with the AOC that is known for its challenge. Join me as I add some extra Duncan (Ridge) and double down on Coosa (Mountain) for a challenging and rewarding mid-week D6 adventure.

We will start at the visitor center of Vogel State Park where we will find both flush toilets and ample parking. We will head out on a CCW loop on the Coosa Backcountry trail. The first 3 miles are quite enjoyable as we ease into our trek. Once we cross Wolf Creek Road we start on the arduous assault of Coosa. When we are about half way up Coosa, we will take a right turn onto Calf Stomp Road for about a quarter mile where we will find the trailhead for Roaring Fork Trail. This is the exploratory portion of our adventure and will take us past Big Grassy Knob before it intersects with the Duncan Ridge Trail. Lucky for us, a left turn on the DRT will give us a chance to complete our ascent of Coosa. We will stop to enjoy the view from the top of Coosa before we rejoin the Coosa Backountry loop. Next up is Slaughter Mountain... nobody likes Slaughter Mountain. As we descend Slaughter, we will peel off the Coosa Loop to get to the terminus of the DRT where it intersects with the AT. No Blood Mountain today, so we will turn around here, rejoin the Coosa Loop and make our way back to our cars.

This is a difficult D6 hike with about 4500 feet of elevation gain. Recent D6 experience is required to join the fun. Under experienced hikers will be move to the wait list until the TL can evaluate your recent experience.
