Cumberland Island is 17.5 miles long and totals 36,415 acres of which 16,850 are marsh, mud flats, and tidal creeks. It is well known for its sea turtles, wild turkeys, wild horses, armadillos, abundant shore birds, dune fields, maritime forests, salt marshes, and historic structures.

On Thursday November 25th we will take the ferry departing St. Marys at 11:45 a.m. There are no facilities in the backcountry sites and water should be treated. Campfires are not permitted in the backcountry and portable stoves are required. There are four backcountry sites ranging from 3.5 to 10.8 miles from the ferry dock. Sites are chosen upon arrival. The plan is to hike up to Yankee Paradise backcountry campsite to spend our first night and explore the surrounding area, which includes the Plum Orchard Mansion.

On Friday we will move to the Brickhill Bluff backcountry campsite and explore the area known as The Settlement.

On Saturday we will camp at Stafford Beach backcountry campsite. This site has the shortest walk to the beach of all the sites and brings us closest to the docks for our return trip.

On Sunday we will hike back to the docks and take the ferry that departs from Cumberland Island at 10:15 a.m.
