Let’s visit a local favorite, Pickett’s Mill Battlefield State Historic Site.

SITE DESCRIPTION: Pickett’s Mill is one of the best-preserved Civil War battlefields in the nation. Visitors can travel roads used by Civil War troops, see earthworks, and walk through the same ravine where hundreds died. An authentic 1800s pioneer cabin is furnished and open for tours during certain events.

EVENT TIME: 10:00AM - 1:00PM.

EVENT DESCRIPTION:  Our hike will begin with a visit to one of the best-preserved pioneer cabins in the Southeast. We won’t be able to go inside but we can roam the cabin grounds and outbuildings.  We’ll then back track a short distance and start hiking in and around the battlefield. We’ll hike a total of 4.8 miles crisscrossing the battlefield, ravine, creeks, and hills.

Throughout this hike I will share some of the history of the Civil War battle to include civilian life in this area. I will also share what knowledge I have of the local plants and wildlife as we see them. We’ll look at the historic ruins of Pickett’s Mill. The mill is long gone but you can still see the remnants of the earthen dam.

NEED TO KNOW:

  • The museum/visitor center will be CLOSED.
  • The restrooms are OPEN.
  • A $5 parking fee applies here. Please arrive early if paying onsite.

HIKE RATING:   D2 – We will make several stops and will likely settle out to a 2.0-2.5 mph pace.  This is like any north GA terrain. There will be hills. All creek crossings are over bridges.

REQUIRED:  Georgia State Park Pass. Annual or Daily. To pay onsite you must bring the exact change of $5. Checks are accepted.  The museum will be closed. CC/Debit not accepted.

WATER:   Bring more water than you think you need. You would rather have it and not need it than need and not have it.  I personally carry 1-2 liters of water for this hike rating.

HIKING POLES?:  While there will be rocks and roots to traverse the trails are not excessively rocky or with roots. Hiking poles are OPTIONAL.

FOOD:  It’s always a good idea to pack a snack just in case you get the munchies.

ATTIRE: General hiking attire will suffice. Water shoes are not needed.

DOGS?: Dogs are allowed but MUST be on a 6ft leash at all times.
