This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.

Itinerary:

Our plan is to meet at the Red Top Mountain Trading Post, where the  lollipop loop Homestead Trail (Yellow Trail) begins, so first things first:

1. This trail is new to us, so if trail signage is spotty, we MAY be happily wandering around a bit. Highly unlikely, but possible... and

2. This is a dog-friendly hike so our 3-year-old Golden Doodle will be with us, mainly to chase away squirrels and any other creatures she deems unworthy company!

Atlanta Trails describes this trail thus:

From its trailhead, the five-mile Homestead loop hikes a mile north to Lake Allatoona, wandering through a forest filled with ferns, wildflowers, and wildlife. Reaching the lake’s shore, the hike begins a meandering 3.5-mile loop, rolling elevation and catching stunning view after view. And with plenty of shoreline access, it’s one of our favorite dog-friendly hikes in North Georgia, offering many chances for a mid-hike swim in the lake.

Although there appears to be only 500+ feet of elevation gain, previous AOC trip leaders have cautioned beginners that there are a few short but strenuous climbs so if you have not recently completed any D2+ hikes, or if have mobility issues, this is NOT the hike for you!

Come Tuesday, we'll meet at the Red Top Mountain Trading Post, located at 659 Red Top Mountain Road Southeast, Cartersville, GA, at around 1:15 PM so that we can do our meet-and-greeet before beginning our hike promptly at 1:30 PM.

Please note: Red Top Mountain State Park charges a $5 entry fee per vehicle, unless you have the annual State Park parking pass, in which case you're in!
