This itinerary showcases some of the most beautiful spots in this corner of Patagonia. It is one day longer than last year's event and there is a small overlap: rafting on the Limay River and hiking on Quetrihue Pensinsula (although last year we did this hike in reverse order).

Day 1. (Sunday, 12/10). Departure from Atlanta.

Day 2. (Monday, 12/11): Arrive at Ministro Pistarini (Ezeiza) International Airport in Buenos Aires. (Airport code: EZE.) Take shuttle bus to Aeroparque (AEP),  where our domestic flight to San Carlos de Bariloche (BRC) departs. Note: there are a few flights directly from EZE to BRC. Arrive in San Carlos de Bariloche in the afternoon. You will be met at the airport and driven to the city.   Meet with our local organizer and pay the balance of the event cost. Meet with guides. Sleep in hotel or hostel. Dinner in town (lodging and dinner at your own expense).

Day 3. (Tuesday, December 12). Hike from Catedral Village to Refugio Frei, where we will spend the night. Time: around 4 hours. (Elevation change: 700 meters up. D4).

Day 4. (Wednesday, December 13). Return to Bariloche on a different trail (Elevation chsnge: 900 meters down, D3).  Lodging and dinner at your own expense.

Day 5. (Thursday, December 14). In the morning we visit the caves of Cerro Leones. This involves a short hike (D1). After that we drive a short distance to Rincón Chico on the Limay River. Rafting to Villa Llanquín (about 90 minutes, D1), where we will have a barbecue lunch. Transfer to Villa La Angostura (around 90 minutes), where we will spend the night.  Lodging and dinner at your own expense.

Day 6. (Friday, December 15). We hike the length of Quetrihue Peninsula (7.5 miles, D2). We explore the Arrayanes forest at its tip, and then cross Nahuel Huapi Lake by boat to a small ranch on the other side. The accomodations are similar to those in a staffed refugio.

Day 7. (Saturday, December 16). Climb Cerro Dormilón (elevation change, 900 meters, on a good trail). Time: about 4 hours, D4). Spend the night in a refugio. (This refugio is unstaffed, but has good mattresses, a stove, and an outdoor privy; the guides will cook dinner).

Day 8. (Sunday, December 17). Return to the ranch (90 minutes, D2). Do local hikes.

Day 9 (Monday, December 18). Take a boat to Brazo Machete and hike to Gallardo Cascade (90 minutes, D2) or all the way back to the ranch (3.5 hours, D3; you may choose which option you prefer. Return to Villa La Angostura by boat and to Bariloche by van, where we will spend the night.  Lodging and dinner at your own expense.

Day 9. (Tuesday, December 19). Transfer to Bariloche airport in the morning and fly back to Buenos Aires. Fly back to the US in the evening.

Day 10. (Wednesday, December 20). Arrive in the US.

NOTES:

This itinerary is subject to change based on weather conditions.

Refugio Frei is a fully staffed cabin with bunk beds and hard mattresses.
