Itinerary:

Fans of the AT already know that Blood Mountain, at 4458 ft., is not only the sixth-tallest mountain in Georgia but also the highest peak on the Georgia section of the AT. Also, legend has it that the name of the mountain is derived from the color of the ground having been stained blood red after a pitched and brutal battle between the Cherokee and Muscogee. Sacred ground indeed!

So, if you want to summit the tallest peak on the Georgia AT, or just want to bag this peak, here's how: Meet us at the Byron Reese Trailhead parking lot by 6:45 for intros and such. At 7:00, we'll start on the Freeman trail till it intersects with the AT, hang a right, go up the Brandenburg steps to the Blood Mountain Overlook and shelter, spend some time admiring the view, before retracing our way via Mountain Crossings store, back to our cars.

DISCLAIMER: This is a moderately strenuous hike with 1500+ foot elevation gain and some treacherous steps. So, if you have not completed any D3+ hikes recently, have mobility issues, are recovering from injury, or prefer a slow pace, please sit this one out!
