Itinerary:

In many European countries, the appearance of a rare Blue Moon signals the emergence of wolves! So, on this rare blue supermoon night, let's beat the heat, get a decent workout, and perhaps all howl together at the Blue Moon on the Summit of Stone mountain.

The plan is to hike a modified Cherokee Trail from the Whistle Stop station to the lake crossing and back, then pick up the mountain connector to summit the Rock, tag the geomarkers, catch the sunset at 8:06 PM (20:06) followed by the Super Blue Moonrise at 8:16 PM (20:16), before descending in the dark, via the walk-up trail, to the parking lot.

Although most of the hike is along wooded trails, we do walk over several patches of exposed granite which can be fun and dangerous at the same time. Please make sure you wear appropriate footwear with good traction so that you can tackle the slick-when-wet granite. Also, do not forget your HEADLAMP. The moderate pace is designed to keep the group together, allow for plenty of photo ops, and promote deep breathing!

DISCLAIMER: This is a RAIN-OR-SHINE, moderately strenuous hike with 1000+ foot elevation gain and a substantial amount of rock scrambling. So, if you have mobility issues, are recovering from injury, queasy about hiking in the rain, or prefer a slow pace, this is NOT the hike for you!
