Itinerary:

Want a fantastic panoramic view from a high summit on the Appalachian Trail? Look no further than this AOC classic hike!

Silers Bald is within a couple of hours drive time from Atlanta and offers a breathtaking experience. At 5,216 feet the summit has commanding views in almost all directions.

After leaving the trailhead at Winding Stair Gap, we will cross in front of a small waterfall. Passing by a few other small creeks in the first half mile, we will gradually ascend almost 2,000 feet on the Appalachian Trail. At 3.7 miles the AT intersects the blue-blazed Silers Bald Shelter trail. Shortly afterwards, at 4.3 miles, we will enter the grassy clearing known as Snowbird Gap. We'll step off the AT here to turn left and hike up the steep grassy hill to summit Silers Bald. At the summit we'll enjoy lunch with wonderful views, and perhaps toss around a frisbee.

We'll then retrace our steps to the parking area, unless there is a desire to take a brief detour to see the Silers Bald backpacking shelter. We might stop for to enjoy a beer in Clayton, Georgia on the way back for those interested in post-hike refreshment.

IMPORTANT: This is a challenging D4 mountain trek with nearly 2,000 feet elevation gain. You'll need recent D4+ or equivalent hiking experience and be comfortable moving at a moderate pace of 2.5 mph, including a few steep uphill stretches. If you don't have recent D4 or higher hiking experience with the AOC them the Trip Leader will contact you to determine whether this event is right for you.
