Itinerary:

IF POSSIBLE, REGISTER FOR NTD AT THE 'HOOCH ON SATURDAY 6/5 TO GET THE MOST OUT OF THIS CLASS.

While on a trail, did you ever catch yourself saying "this section is in terrible shape and needs work?"  Have you ever said "this section is perfect?"   Ever use a branch to pull yourself up a slippery section?  You probably remember the bad parts because those sections require you to do something out of the norm.  Maybe you take a quick detour and cut the trail to avoid mud and standing water.  Maybe you can't even determine where the tail is suppose to take you so you keep moving, looking for a blaze to confirm you are heading in the correct direction.  And if a trail was designed properly, you likely don't remember the trail tread so much as the views and sounds.

Many land managers have MOUs (memorandums of understanding) with various groups (AT, SORBA, backcountry horseman) allowing members to perform unsupervised trail work.  To do so, you need to be proficient and often have to attend formal training.  A few years ago I completed Trail School and will share some of the main topics in a condensed class to be held at REI in-town.

We'll cover:

trail design
trail construction
trail maintenance
proper tool usage

I'm going to set the limit at five and bump it to ten based on whom is attending NTD on 6/5.

Not trying to be mean, but, IF YOU AREN'T SERIOUS ABOUT DOING TRAIL WORK FOR MORE THAN ONE DAY PER YEAR PLEASE DON'T REGISTER, ONLY 10 SPOTS ARE AVAILABLE DUE TO CLASSROOM SIZE.  I'm pretty passionate about trail work and would like to see people that are not in the "one and done" category.
Thank you!
