Bowmans Island

NOTE: Our meeting place has changed. Electronic signs say Buford Dam Rd will be closed in both directions on either side of the Bowmans Island Parking Lot. I have changed the directions to park in the lot on Powerhouse Rd.  Please read.

Please join me for a hike at Bowmans Island CRNRA. We will meet in the CRNRA parking lot which is the 1st lot on the right after you enter the park. It is a smallish gravel lot. The trails consist of an almost 4 mile out and back flat trail along the river, and another 3 or so miles through the hills. We will do a total of about 6 miles with 420 feet of elevation, while hiking at around 2.6 mph (faster by the river, slower in the hills). The elevation gain consists of a long, but not steep, hill at the beginning, and a couple of smaller ones in the middle. 

There are bathrooms in the Corps of Engineers parking lot at the end of the road.

Please arrive 10 minutes early for a hike description and introductions. Arrive earlier if you need to buy a park pass or use the restroom. Daily passes are $5 and can be purchased with credit card at the entrance kiosk. It will probably be easier to purchase one on-line or buy one at the Island Ford Visitor Center before the hike. I say that because I struggle with technology. We will start promptly at 10.

DO NOT LEAVE ANY VALUABLES IN YOUR CAR. THERE HAVE BEEN BREAK-INS. PUT THEM IN YOUR TRUNK OR LEAVE THEM AT HOME.

Powerhouse Rd, Cumming GA

Our meeting place has changed due to Buford Dam Rd being closed on Tuesday on either side of the Bowmans Island Parking Lot.  We will now meet in the Powerhouse Rd parking lot on the East side of Buford Dam.

From Peachtree Industrial:

Turn right onto Green Rd then left onto South Waterworks Rd.  Turn right on Buford Dam Rd. Turn left on Powerhouse Rd just before getting to the dam. The parking lot is at the end of the road. 

From Hwy 400:

Exit east on Hwy 20.  Stay on 20 until you cross the river, then turn left onto Riverside Rd. This will put you on the East side of the dam. Then, turn left onto Suwanee Dam Rd, and left on Buford Dam Rd. Turn left on Powerhouse Rd just before getting to the dam. The parking lot is at the end of the road.
