For new members and/or members without recent D5 hiking related experience, please email the trip leaders explaining your recent long distance hiking experience and hiking pace.  Please don't take it personal, but you may be moved to the waiting list until we hear back from you and approve you for this hike.  We want everyone to have an enjoyable and fun hiking experience.

Hiking itinerary

The Arkaquah Trail: A Georgia Gem

The Arkaquah Trail is renowned for its popularity, fun factor, challenges, and breathtaking scenery. As you hike, take in the stunning views of Standing Indian Mountain and glimpses of the Smoky Mountains to the north. This 12-mile trail offers a mix of ups and downs, with plenty of photo-worthy moments along the way.

The Ascent to Brasstown Bald

Our journey begins at Track Rock Gap, situated at an elevation of 2,280 feet. From there, we’ll tackle the 6.1-mile climb to the summit of Brasstown Bald, Georgia’s highest peak at 4,784 feet. Brace yourself for the initial steep ascent—it’s the kind of challenge that makes you wish for an escalator! But fear not; once we reach the ridge crest, the rolling ridge line will lead us past four mountains ranging from 3,600 to 4,300 feet. We’ll be cruising and feeling invigorated!

Summit Views and Reflection

Upon reaching the parking lot at the top, we’ll follow the half-mile paved tourist trail to the summit. There, you’ll find a store, restrooms (for those quick breaks), and a 360-degree observation deck. If the weather cooperates, we’ll have panoramic views of four states, providing a moment to reflect on nature’s grandeur and the beauty of life. And don’t forget to capture some stunning mountain photos—you’ve earned it!

Recharge and Return

Before our descent back to the trailhead, we will recharge with a snack at the summit. It’s the perfect way to refuel and savor the memories of this unforgettable hike with some amazing AOC friends!

See you on the trail!
