Itinerary:
Tumbling Rock

Join us for a little Sunday caving, and cool off from the summer heat.

This is one of our favourite caves, and with good reason! Tumbling Rock Cave has a variety of historical and natural features such as the remains of Salt-peter mining from the 1700's to 1800's, large flowstone formations with nice coloration of translucent blues, grays & whites, massive column formations called the elephants feet and a hallway of older formations called the "Totem Gallery"—imagine the columns seen in old Greek and Roman ruins.

Our main destination will be the "topless dome" with a 400' high waterfall cascading from the ceiling and the Christmas Tree. There are six miles of cave and rooms to explore and we'll explore as much as can be safely travelled in a group. Trip time will be about five hours round trip. This is not considered a very tough cave, so it's perfect for folks who only cave occasionally.

Beginners are welcome: Please keep in mind that caving is an active sport that requires more from your body than a casual hike. Squeezes through tight spaces, crawling on your hands and knees, twisting, climbing up and climbing down are just part of the fun :-)

Required Items to Bring:
  • Caving or Climbing Helmet with a BRIGHT Water Resistant Light. Bicycle helmets will not do. If you don't have a helmet, rentals will be available. If you are renting a helmet you will need to bring 8AA size batteries for the light. 4 for the light and 4 for spares.
  • A backup light such as a medium sized 2AA or 3AA Maglight, and extra batteries for your main light
  • Gloves and Knee pads (soft only, no hard plastic)
  • Hiking Boots or shoes with good tread (no smooth soles)
  • And we will get very wet so synthetic clothes are best, cotton or denim will hold water and you will be cold. The air tempin the cave is relatively warm but the water is around 58 degrees.
  • A daypack or fanny pack to hold water, snacks (energy bars), a spare light and anything else you wish to bring with you. Ziplock bags are great for keeping items dry. Please also bring a wide mouthed "throwaway" bottle such as an empty VitaminWater bottle, or extra tough zip lock bags; we practice Leave No Trace and that includes personal waste in caves.
  • At the end of the trip (outside the cave) you will need a change of clothes and a large plastic bag to contain your dirty/wet clothes for the trip back to the park and ride.
  • Money for a meal in Scottsboro after caving
