Itinerary:

Notice: This web page is designed so that you can only put yourself on the waiting list. Once I verify that you satisfy the registration requirements I will move you to the list of participants. See registration requirements below.

Day 1 (Friday, December 13). Depart from Atlanta.

Day 2 (Saturday, December 14). Arrive at Ministro Pistarini (Ezeiza) International Airport in Buenos Aires. (Airport code: EZE.) Take shuttle bus to Aeroparque (AEP),  where our domestic flight to San Carlos de Bariloche (BRC). departs. Note: there are a few flights directly from EZE to BRC. Arrive in Bariloche in the afternoon.  Meet with our local organizer. Pay the remainder of the event cost.

Day 3 (Sunday, December 15). Drive to trailhead at Colonia Suiza and ascend to Refugio Laguna Negra, also known as Refugio Italia or Refugio Manfredo Segre (1700m), where we will spend the night. Hiking time: about 6 hours. Elevation change: a little over 1000 meters.

Day 4: (Monday, December 16). We ascend the slopes of Cerro Bayley Willis, then follow the course of Arroyo La Chata down to Laguna CAB. Hiking time: about 7 hours.

Day 5: (Tuesday, December 17). We climb Cerro CAB (1935 m) and descend to Mallin de las Vueltas, where we camp. Hiking time: 5 to 6 hours.

Day 6: (Wednesday, December 18). We climb Cerro Cristal (1282 m) and descend to Laguna Cretton, where we camp. Hiking time: 5 to 6 hours.

Day 7: (Thursday, December 19). We wade across Laguna Azul and climb to the ridge of Cerro Capitan, which rises up to 2000 meters; then descend to the camping at Laguna Ilon. This facility features a number of domes which have bunk beds. Hiking time: 6 to 7 hours.

Day 8.  (Friday, December 20). In the morning hike to a nearby panoramic point, where we can see Lago Frei a couple of thousand feet below. In the afternoon descend to Pampa Linda and return to Bariloche by van or bus (a two hour trip). 

Day 9 (Saturday, December 21). In the morning we sail to Brazo Tristeza, a branch of Lake Nahuel Huapi (a ride of about two hours). We then hike about one hour to Lago Frei through a beautiful forest of majestic trees. After admiring the views we walk back the way we came. We will have lunch on the boat.

Day 10 (Sunday, December 22). Return to Buenos Aires in the morning. Fly to Atlanta in the evening.

Day 11 (Monday, December 23). Arrive to Atlanta in the morning

NOTES:
This itinerary is subject to change based on weather conditions.
The refugio is a fully staffed cabin with bunk beds and hard mattresses. If you prefer to prepare your own food, you can bring your supplies from Bariloche and use the shelter's wood burning stove for a small fee. The terrain is quite rugged, with a lot of scree and possibly snow. Crampons, snowshoes, and other technical equipment will be provided if needed.

The Trip Leader(s) for this event has (have) elected either to personally collect the funds that event participants are required to pay, or to require participants to pay funds directly to a third party. No funds will be paid to the Atlanta Outdoor Club for this event, except for the $25.00 AOC user fee. Therefore, by registering for this event, you acknowledge and agree to the following: (1) the monies paid by registrants will not be monitored, managed, or otherwise accounted for by the Atlanta Outdoor Club; (2) that the Atlanta Outdoor Club bears no financial responsibility for this event; and (3) you waive any and all claims against the Atlanta Outdoor Club, and hold the Atlanta Outdoor Club harmless for the loss of any monies you paid for this event.

Notwithstanding the foregoing, any paying registrant may request directly from the Trip Leader, prior to the event, a breakdown of funds collected, estimated expenses, and deposits made in anticipation of the event. Following the event, the Trip Leader must complete his or her financial accounting for the event, with supporting documentation, within 30 days of the completion of the event, and a paid registrant may request a breakdown of funds collected, money spent and supporting documentation after that time. If you are unable to obtain requested documentation, please contact the Director of Paid Events.

 


Required Items to Bring:

Clothing: Long johns - 2 pairs of trousers - 2 pairs of socks - 3 sets of underwear - Hiking boots (waterproof) - sandals or booties for indoors - 3 t-shirts - 2 sweaters - Waterproof parka - Waterproof pant covers - gaiters - 1 pair of glove liners - 1 pair of waterproof gloves- balaclava - sun hat - baseball cap - sleeping bag (rated to 20 degrees F). 

Toiletries: Toilet paper and paper tissues - Toothpaste and toothbrush - Deodorant - glycerine soap or detergent - Lip balm.

Equipment: Backpack (minimum size: 50 liters). - Backpack cover or two large trash bags - Water bottle - Head lamp and spare batteries - Sunglasses (important!) - Trekking poles - Eating utensils.

Miscellaneous: plastic bags for clothing and garbage - personal first-aid kit - sunblock (at least SPF 30) - lighter (can be purchased in Bariloche).

You will be asked to carry same equipment and/or food. Some clothes and your suitcase may be left in the hotel in Bariloche.

Registration Requirements.
To participate in this event you must be either an AOC trip leader or an active AOC member recommended by an AOC trip leader that I know well. You must place yourself on the waiting list. Once I verify you satisfy the requirements, I will move you to the list of participants.

Payment and Refund Schedule:

1. A deposit of $275.00 must be received by the organizer through PayPal to zalikri@me.com by November 1. This includes a $25 AOC user fee which is nonrefundable. The balance of the deposit will be nonrefundable after November 8. However, if a qualified substitute can be found to take your place in the trip, he can use your deposit. 
2. You will pay for your trip (less the deposit) in Bariloche. Payment must be in cash in US dollars.

You must book lodging in Bariloche for the nights of 12/14, 12/20 and 12/21. Before boking your lodging please contact the organizer; this is important to ensure that all participants lodge close to each other.

If you wish to stay in the area after finishing the event, there are several alternatives available including climbing Cerro Tronador, but arrangements must be made in advance. Consult the event organizer for details.

A nonrefundable $25.00 AOC user fee.

-All meals and snacks while on the trails and in the shelter.

-Licensed guide, assistant guides and insurance (these are requirements of the park authorities).

-Technical and cooking equipment as needed.

- Boat to and from Brazo Tristeza and lunch aboard.

COST DOES NOT INCLUDE:

-Airfare (Atlanta to Bariloche and return, changing planes in Buenos Aires).

-Shuttle bus between airports in Buenos Aires (around $15.00 each way).

-Meals and lodging in Bariloche and in transit to and from Bariloche.

Estimate the total cost of this trip, including airfare, lodging in hotels, event cost, etc, at around $4500.
