Itinerary:
moderate 4.5-mile hike

Were going to try this one (third attempt) one more time! Come freeze your bippies off and join Bruce for this close to town short but moderate hike. When I drove up to check mileages for instructions for the group on January 29th, Cooper Furnace had a closed for the season sign up; even though they have always been a year around park, just as the sister park, Vinyard Mountain-on the other side of the Etowah River, only a stones throw from Coopers Furnace. Vinyard Mountain is open, and Im going to have to lead the hike their instead. The hike is very similar, scenic, with an overlook of Allatoona Dam from the other side of the river; its just a bit longer of a hike-approximately four and half miles instead of 3.4 miles Cooper Furnace-Laurel Ridge is.

This will be a nice workout on the Eagle Scout trail that has overlooks of Allatoona Dam and its sister park across the Etowah River-Cooper Furnace. This trail has a good moderate climb of several hundred feet from its start at 750’ to the 1354’ summit of Vinyard Mountain. Then we’ll walk the easier ‘bunny’ trail after coming down off the summit around the base of the mountain to the ‘DAM’ overlook on Lake Allatoona, for extra workout value.

There will, as on most Bruce events be an optional dining experience after the hike to enjoy each other’s company longer – probably at the Mexican restaurant very close to the park and ride.
