Itinerary:

We will head up Black Balsam Knob, about 0.6 miles and a 400' climb. We will eat lunch on top of Black Balsam Knob while enjoying the 360 degree views. After that, we'll descend a little, then head up Tennent Mountain for more beautiful views, then continue on the Art Loeb following a nice undulating ridge line to Shining Rock Gap where we'll camp. After setting up camp we will head towards Shining Rock where we will check out the huge chunks of white quartzite with great views. The next morning we will lounge around the campsite, or walk a short distance for morning views from Shining Rock, eat and break camp leaving no later than 11am. The drive back is about 3.5 hrs so we should get back late afternoon or early evening. If everyone wants we can stop on the way home for dinner. This is a relatively easy trip but you must be able to carry all your gear 10.38 miles both ways, staying at high altitude, twice going over 6K at Black Balsam and Tennent Mtn. We have had some people experience a bit of altitude sickness (slight headache) on this trip in the past. If you've never hiked with me before, please contact me and let me know your experience and fitness level when you sign up. We may get lucky and see some nice fall colors on this trip! Total round trip distance is only 10.38 miles, but we'll be enjoying the views, and taking a lot of pictures, so this is not a march to camp. Think Sound of Music...
