Itinerary:

OVERVIEW:  I hope everyone had a great Labor Day Weekend!  The weather is shaping up nicely for this Thursday with expected midday temps in the mid-80s and hardly any chance of rain -- so, how about a nice midday hike?!.  Hahn Woods and its adjoining Lullwater Park are prized by hikers and joggers as a "crown jewel" of Emory University's extended campus in NE Atlanta.  The 185-acre forested nature preserve boasts an extensive trail system that takes visitors along the banks of South Fork Peachtree Creek with its old mill ruins & waterfalls, over the creek via a $175,000 210-foot-long suspension footbridge, past the Emory president's "Lullwater Estate" mansion, and around beautiful Candler Lake.  The older creekside trails connect to the more recently developed "Hahn Woods" nature preserve, adjoining Houston Mill Road.

WHEN & WHERE?
We’ll gather at 12:00 Noon in the Hahn Woods free parking lot at 866 Houston Mill Rd NE, Atlanta, GA 30329—see detailed Directions below.

HIKING & CREEKSIDE PICNIC PLAN:  Bring two or three simple food & drink items for the "picnic," perhaps in a small cooler or light daypack.  At about 12:15, After introducing ourselves and signing our AOC waiver form) we’ll head down to a scenic spot by the creek near our vehicles to enjoy our picnic lunches and drinks. After lunch we'll hike briefly past the cars again, then take a moderate hiking pace on the creekside trails, with occasional pauses and photo-ops at scenic spots along the way—about 3 miles total.  We expect to be back at our vehicles by about 2:00 PM.

Required Items to Bring:

• Wear comfortable well-broken-in Athletic Shoes or Hiking Boots with a coarse tread and Lightweight Clothing Layers.

• Bring a simple Picnic Lunch (e.g., sandwich, fresh fruit, trail mix, personal salad, etc.) and beverage packed in a lightweight DayPack or Fanny Pack.  It is our custom to share various items that we have more than enough of.
SUGGESTION:  If you plan to drive from work, consider packing your picnic lunch and beverages in a small iced-down Cooler to leave in your car while you're at work, and transfer it to your pack when we meet for the hike.

Hydrate in advance and carry in your pack a filled Water Bottle or two (or other favorite soft beverages)—or if you have one, your filled "Camelbak" or other hydration system.

Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.

• Consider bringing a pair of Trekking Poles if you have a pair and like to use them.  A simple Hiking Stick is an excellent alternative.

• Consider bringing your Camera—also perhaps lightweight Binoculars if you have a pair, for birding, etc.
