Hiking 101

Not a lot, and plenty!  Well, ok... some.

Join me for a short hike & learning session about how to keep comfortable and safe while you hike. 

We'll meet up at the dog park near Leita Thompson Memorial at 5:30 and introduce ourselves.  Then, we'll begin our hike around 5:45, and we'll follow the red/blue trails for about a half a mile.  We'll take a break when we get to the lake, and I'll spend about 30 minutes going over some of the things new hikers should know, including gear basics, how to keep (reasonably) safe while hiking, and good trail etiquette.  Then, we'll pick up the trail and finish up our hike. Total hiking distance will be about 2.5 miles but we can take a short cut if needed.

Note:  I'd like to give priority spots to those AOCers who have been to fewer than three hikes.

We will meet at the dog park.  In order to make sure we have plenty of parking, be sure to park at the dog park.  It is located immediately on the right after Mountain Park Road/Bowen Rd. (if you are coming from the East.  If you are coming from the west, you'll need to make a u-turn at Mountain Park Road then take an immediate right to get to the dog park.)  Note, please do NOT bring your dog to this hike.

Leita Thompson Memorial is a nice little gem of a park located in Roswell, on Hwy 92, about 5 miles west of GA400.  The well-maintained trails roll gently through a shady woodlands that includes both a lake and nice little creek.  The memorial itself has flower gardens where we'll be able to take a second, shorter break if needed.  Note:  although this is a very easy hike for those who have been hiking or exercising regularly, if you are new you need to know that this is NOT flat terrain.  Please be sure that you can walk at least three miles at a moderate pace before you sign up for this hike. 

We may go out for a bite to eat afterwards, plenty of places close by.
