Itinerary:

 

DISCLAIMER: This hike starts at the Burnt Hickory parking lot and is a strenuous, moderately fast-paced hike (2 to 3 mph = 20 to 30 minute/mile) with 1800+ foot elevation gain and some amount of rock scrambling. So, if you have mobility issues, are recovering from injury, or prefer a slow pace, please sit this one out!

Please note: You must have recent D3+ experience to sign up.

 

Why hike at 06:30? It's cool, less crowded, get your workout in before breakfast, and best of all, catch a sunrise. Win-win-win-win!

 

So, after meet and greet at the Burnt Hickory parking lot, we'll hike up Pigeon Hill, then up Little Kennesaw to the summit of Big Kennesaw, down to the Visitor Center for a 10-minute water/potty break, and finally retrace our steps back up Big/Little Kennesaw Mountain and back to the Burnt Hickory parking lot.

 

The good news is that on this hike, you may go at your own (fast) pace; the bad news is that you must finish this hike within 3 hours to earn your credit. I intend to hike at a moderate pace and stop for three water breaks (Big Kennesaw, Visitor Center, and Big Kennesaw) before returning to the Burnt Hickory parking lot.

 

Please plan to arrive 10 minutes early to allow time for parking, introductions, and the usual safety spiel.


Required Items to Bring:

Weather appropriate clothing

Hiking boots/shoes w/ good traction

Water (2 to 3 litres), and

Your SOH (sense of humor)

Headlamp

Please, no unregistered guests or +Ones!

Late cancellations, particularly within 36 hours of the event, make it difficult for those on the waitlist to attend. Please be courteous to your fellow AOC members and cancel with as much notice as possible. 

Please note: Members who sign up and fail to attend an event with an active waitlist, will automatically earn a “no show.”

I usually hike RAIN-or-SHINE! However, in case of severe weather or other unforeseen emergencies that warrant a cancellation, I will text/email you at least TWO HOURS before the start of the event.


* We encourage all members to follow our Etiquette Guidelines while participating in AOC events.

Cost Includes:

There is no cost for this event, however, the Kennesaw Mountain National Park per Vehicle Daily fee is $5.00, or Annual fee is $40. This fee can be paid:

a. Online at recreation.gov

b. At the automated fee machine located at the Burnt Hickory parking lot, or

c. At the Visitor Center between 9 am and 5 pm daily. Purchases can be made with card only, no cash accepted.


Cancellation/Partial Attendance:   Please review the AOC cancellation policy.

In order to earn credit for this event, participants must begin and complete the entire hike/event with the group, or within the stated time frame.
