Take flight with this hike around airport + Ashford Forest Preserve Park

This hike celebrates all things aviation!

We'll start our hike outside the Downwind Restaurant and Lounge in the lawn area at DeKalb-Peachtree Airport. From there, we'll walk through the airport grounds on a paved sidewalk to Clairmont Road.

Once we cross Clairmont, we'll work our way along 9th street (through an upscale neighborhood) to the Ashford Forest Preserve Park where we'll finally hit some dirt on a natural surfaced trail. The preserve includes a number of trees, a creek, and native plants within this 33-acre greenspace. Local neighbors often walk their dogs in this park.

Once we leave the park, we'll walk a short distance along Clairmont Road to the The 57th Fighter Group Restaurant next to the DeKalb-Peachtree Airport. We'll wander the grounds there (location is considered an iconic Atlanta landmark ) and pause our hike for a few minutes to watch some planes take off along the airport runway.

We'll then retrace our steps back through the Ashford Forest Preserve Park and the upscale neighborhood on 9th street before returning to the lawn area at DeKalb-Peachtree Airport where we started the hike.

The group is invited to have lunch (optional) and watch airplanes take off and land from the Downwind Restaurant and Lounge after the hike.

We will meet outside the Downwind Restaurant and Lounge in the lawn area at DeKalb-Peachtree Airport.

From downtown Atlanta: 

Take I-85 North to Exit #91 Clairmont Road
Turn left and go North for 2.6 miles
Turn right on Airport Road

From North Atlanta suburbs

Take I-75 South or GA 400 South to I-285 East
Take I-285 East to Exit #21 Ashford Dunwoody Road
Turn right onto Ashford Dunwoody Road go south for 1.8 miles
Continue on Johnson Ferry Rd NE and go Southeast for 0.9 miles
Turn left onto Peachtree Industrial, go Northeast for 0.2 miles
Turn right onto Clairmont Road and go South for 0.9 miles
Turn left onto Airport Road
