Note: This is an "EXPLORATORY" trip. This means that there are parts of this trip, or perhaps the whole trip, that is new to your Trip Leader(s). However, they are confident that this will not be an issue.
This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.

Itinerary:

Please join me for a hike to the Mount Cammerer stone fire tower. This is one of three GSMNP hikes I will be leading. Join one, two or all three. I will be staying in Gatlinburg Tuesday and Wednesday nights. If anyone is interested we can meet for dinner.

I have not done this hike before so it is noted as Exploratory.

We will start the hike at the trailhead near campsite 92. This hike is the shortest and most common route to the summit of Mt. Cammerer at 4,928 ft.

We will cross Cosby Creek and turn right on the Low Gap Trail. The trail climbs about 3 miles up the mountain on a series of switchbacks till we reach the AT. Left turn on the AT for about 2 miles. We will then reach the junction with the Mount Cammerer Trail. We will go straight and reach the summit in .6 miles. At the summit is a stone fire tower built in the 1930's. The tower was fully restored in 1995. The view is noted as one of the best in the park. We will have lunch at the tower and then head back the way we came.

This is a strenous D5 hike, 11.1 miles round trip, and 3,000+ feet elevation gain. You should be able to keep pace with the group with minimal rest breaks. We will stay together as a group. To join the hike, please have solid high D5+ AOC hiking experience in the last 4 weeks.

For those staying in Gatlinburg the night before and returning to Gatlinburg, we can plan to carpool to the trailhead.

Please plan to arrive 10-15 minutes early so we can start the hike promptly at 9:00 a.m.
