Note: This is an "EXPLORATORY" trip. This means that there are parts of this trip, or perhaps the whole trip, that is new to your Trip Leader(s). However, they are confident that this will not be an issue. This note is here so that you can make an informed decision. When a Trip Leader isn't personally familiar with a trip, there is an increased chance of things not going as planned and you need to be prepared. The Trip Leader may have additional details in the itinerary.

Remember back in 2001, when you sat in that darkened theatre, watching in rapt fascination as Frodo, Aragorn, and Legolas battled the Orks for supremacy in "The Lord of the Rings," and you promised yourself that someday... someday, you would grit your teeth, gird your loins, and traverse the oceans to step onto Middle Earth... land of magical mountains, green meadows, alpine lakes, and rushing streams, aka South Island, New Zealand? No? Ok, maybe that was just me, but you get the idea!
So, bite into a SLICE of KIWI on this classic multi-day hike - a combination of the Milford Track + Routeburn Track - starting and ending in Queenstown, NZ. This is an honest-to-goodness, guided 8-day, 7-night, all-inclusive BACKPACKING adventure through lush rainforests, high mountain passes, crystal-clear rivers, sweeping views of snow-capped peaks, deep valleys, dramatic fiords, and Eisengard...yes, that Eisengard! Want more? How about at the end of each day’s hike, you stay in a private lodge, enjoy a hot shower, a hearty meal, and perhaps unwind with a drink from the bar. Interested? Then read on...
Oh, and by the way, no, it's not a system error that when you sign up for this event, your name goes directly to the WAITING LIST. Once I have verified that you have met, and completed, the participation requirements (see #5 below), I will move you to the list of participants.

| How to Get There: | |||||||
| Event Directions: | 1. From Atlanta, fly into Auckland (North Island) or Christchurch (South Island). 2. From Auckland or Christchurch, fly, take a bus, or drive to Queenstown, NZ. 3. Meet us on November 1, 2026, in Queenstown, NZ, at that place, that time TBD! | ||||||
| Notes: | |||||||
|
2. WEATHER: November in New Zealand is late spring, bringing generally mild, warming weather with long days, wildflowers, and comfortable temperatures (often 15-20°C/59-68°F). Expect cool nights, warm days and strong sun, with warmer northern areas and cooler southern spots still possible. Of course, there is always the possibility of showers - weather is a fickle friend - and your best remedy is a positive attitude, and good-quality performance clothing/raingear! Think layers for variable weather (merino wool, fleece, waterproof shell). 3. COMMUNICATIONS AND TRANSPORTATION: Cell phone service in rural areas is spotty or non-existent. If you must be in touch, your best options are local SIMs/eSIMs (Spark, One NZ, 2degrees are major networks) or to carry a satellite phone, which may not work due to the lack of satellite signal. This hike is in a remote area and since there are no accessible roads in the vicinity, there is no mechanical transportation available to take hikers from one lodge to the next. 4. INDIVIDUAL HIKES and EVENT CREDIT: There are a total of 7 hikes (D5-3; D4-1; D3-1; D2-1; D1-1) on this event. In order to account for illness, injury, or personal circumstances, these hikes will be posted as separate events and participants can either opt in or out of them. Participants will earn credit for each individual hike, and those who complete at least 5 of the 6 most strenuous hikes with the group, will earn credit for the entire Event. 5a. SIGNING UP (PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS): In order to minimize undue risks, protect the integrity of the event, and ensure an enjoyable event, participants must be:
Based on qualifications and the order of registration, I will move qualified members to the participants list, up to the maximum number of participants. Members who do not qualify or have no AOC trip leader recommendation on record, will remain on the waitlist until such time as they do, and then move to the active list, unless the maximum number of participants has been reached. 5b. SIGNING UP (HOW TO): 1. Register for the event at the bottom of this page; Your name goes directly to the waitlist. 2. If you and I have never hiked together, have a trip leader email me a "glowing" recommendation on your behalf. 3. Watch for your name to appear on the active participant list, and your inbox for an email from me. When it appears… 4. Pay your non-refundable AOC fee of $25 (Login to your account; From the top drop-down menu, select EVENTS > My Upcoming Events; Click on the PAYPAL button next to this event; Pay the $25 fee) 5. Transfer your Outfitter Fee to Kiran, via Zelle or Venmo at 4O4-754-5OO5, or via PayPal to: Paypal.me/Narker 1. This is an extremely popular hike and fills up quickly, so time is of the essence; I have requested a group reservation for AOC and the outfitter has set a hard payment deadline of early February. 2. So, once you have been moved to the participant list, please pay your AOC+Outfitter fee no later than January 20. 3. If you have not paid both fees by that date, you will be moved to the waitlist to make way for the next qualified member. After you have paid your AOC+Outfitter fee, feel free to book your flight, and start packing your bags! 6. SLACKPACKING and your LUGGAGE
This trek is in a remote area, so there is no road access and the outfitter will not be able to transport your luggage for you. You will need to carry your clothes, toiletries, and personal needs for 7 days in a backpack (which you can borrow at no cost from the Outfitters). Your pack should ideally weigh between 15 - 22 pounds. Most people carry one walking set, and one set for the evening, which is usually enough. The lodges all have a dedicated room where you can hand wash your hiking clothes and dry them in time for the next day's journey.
You can store your travel bags at the Outfitters office in Queenstown - for a nominal fee of $6 per bag per day, or approx. $45 for the trip.
Important information for paid events in which payment is managed through the AOC: - Payment must be received by the payment due date and prior to participation in the event. - Some paid events require a minimum number of registered participants. If that number is not met, the event will be canceled and refunds will be issued to those who have already paid. - Third-party vendors often require damage deposits. Each registrant agrees to be liable for and required to reimburse the Atlanta Outdoor Club for any withheld deposits due to the actions of or damages caused by that registrant. - No partial payments. All registrants must pay the posted Member Cost regardless of any agreement you may have with any party involved in the event. - Read the event description carefully for additional information, and contact the trip leader(s) with any questions. * We encourage all members to follow our Etiquette Guidelines while participating in AOC events.
