Note, this is a qualifying/prep hike for my D7 hike on April 4th. Hikers on the waitlist for that D7 hike will be given priority on this hike. Even though mileage and elevation gain are relatively modest, this may be the toughest prep hike due to the number of short steep climbs along the Chunky Gal trail. Join me on this difficult hike along the curiosly named Chunky Gal Trail. This trail is known for its steep climbs and rugged terrain. It's a solid D6 hike with extended and challenging climbs totaling about 16 miles and about 4100 ft elevation gain. We'll start where the trail crosses hwy-64 and head up Boteler Peak for an awesome view of Chatuge Lake and the Hiawasee and Hayesville area. Then it's back down to the cars and across the road for the tough climb up to the intersecion with the AT. Despite how the profile appears, the second part of the hike up to the AT and back is significantly harder than the first climb up Boteler Peak. Expect several steep sections and blowdowns along the way. Stories about the origin of the "Chunky Gal" name vary. One legend tells of a young Cherokee woman who left her family to be with a man from another tribe. Another suggests it's derived from a native American game called "Chunque". This is a tough D6 hike of 16 miles and 4100 ft. The average pace should be 2.7-2.8 mph. Be sure you're comfortable with hikes lasting up to 7 hours including faster pace sections of 3.0+ mph. Recent D6 experience is needed to join the fun. Expect an email from the trip leader to assess your compatibility if you don't have any D6 hikes in your AOC profile over the past few months. | |||||||

| Carpool Cost: | Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $88.00 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances. | ||||||
