Itinerary:

Thanks Ann for recommending beautiful Slovenia and sharing the wonderful photos!

"Pivo na vrhu, Puff v dolini!" (Beer on the peak, puff in the valley!)

The Slovenian hiking lifestyle: beer at the mountain hut and a slice of Kremna Rezina at a lakeside café!

HIGHLIGHTS (PROS)

  1. Our hikes are known for their stunning views, waterfalls, and alpine wildflower meadows.
  2. We have the chance to get a cooked meal for lunch and/or dessert at some mountain huts.
  3. No car = No stress driving narrow mountain roads with hairpin turns and limited parking.
  4. We will maximize the views and hike point to point when possible.
  5. Long summer days will give us plenty of time for sightseeing after the hikes.
  6. We are staying in town, walk a few minutes to the beach, restaurants, and lakeside cafés.
  7. We’ll go sightseeing after hikes in different sections in Triglav whenever possible.

READ BEFORE YOU SIGN UP (CONS)

  1. We ride chairlifts, hike ridges, and cross suspension bridges, heights are essential part of this trip.
  2. Most of the trails have some steep climbs and mixed-surface trail as we pass through towns.
  3. Altitude sickness: Elevation is 1500' by Lake Bled and under 8,000' at the mountain peaks.
  4. This is tourist season; crowds and the occasional traffic jam are to be expected.
  5. No car rental; I’m booking shuttle service and utilizing public bus routes for transportation to/from the trailheads.
  6. No outfitter to blame if and when anything goes other than the way we planned.
  7. Since I’m not working with an outfitter, we are on our own, no hotline number to call
  8. Check your travel insurance policy, these types of trips are not usually covered.
  9. For any accident or medical emergency, we will call / text Mountain Rescue & Medical (112).

JETLAG SHAKE OFF

Our active and exciting adventure official Start is upon arrival to Lake Bled on July 2nd. You can plan to arrive early to Ljubljana, or stay after our trip to explore the capital of Slovenia.

Ljubljana is the largest city in the country, yet, it feels wonderfully small. Dragons are everywhere as it’s the symbol of the city. How cool is that?!

Other options are neighbouring countries such as Italy, Austria, and Hungary or Croatia. Venice for example, is only 5 hours bus ride away.

If you need a starting point, check out my cheat sheet to explore Slovenia at your own pace!

THE EXPEDITION - JULY 2ND - JULY 10TH

Please plan to arrive to Bled on July 2nd.

Our activities will cover most of Triglav, Slovenia's only National Park, protecting the heart of the Julian Alps. Mount Triglav, Slovenia's highest peak and national symbol, which stands at 9,396 ft.

Climbing Triglav is a patriotic duty and a rite of passage for every Slovenian, but we will not attempt this climb, it’s a multi-day trek, the final section is a via ferrata—a protected climbing route.

As our trip approaches, I’ll choose hikes for each day and designate a free day, considering the weather forecast for different regions.

LAKE BLED - JULY 02

There are many fun (but crowded) things to do around Bled, it will depend on your arrival time, I will share a list of "independent activity" to attendees.

Feel free to spread-out the activities and tick off these items during the afternoons while we are in Bled!

My Plan for the day is to stop by Infocenter Triglavska roža Bled, which provides tourist and hiking information, and hosts the “Heaven under Triglav” permanent exhibition, and occasional photographic and art exhibitions.

Then, I will visit Vintgar Gorge, you can get your timed entry ticket here: https://tickets.vintgar.si

PERIČNIK WATERFALL IN VRATA VALLEY - JULY 03

D4 - 13 mi Length - 2100 ft Elev. Gain / Loss AllTrails Map

We pass through attractive forest carpeted with pink cyclamen and full of birdsong, across a footbridge to the stunning Peričnik Waterfall stands out not just for its height—the lower fall is 160 ft tall—but because it offers a rare opportunity to walk behind the waterfall…a very refreshing experience during the hot summer months! Passing the Poldov rovt planina, we see the imposing North Face of Triglav. The river is later greatly reduced in size, and we can rock-hop on stepping stones to get to our lunch spot at the mountain hut: Aljažev dom.

MONUMENT TO PEACE, PEČ SUMMIT TO JASNA LAKE - JULY 04

D5 - 11 mi Length - 2500 ft Elev. Gain / Loss AllTrails Map

We will hike to the point where Slovenian borders intersect with Austria and Italy. Peč, the westernmost peak of the 120km-long Karavanke mountain chain, offers expansive views of Austria. The trail winds through forests, farm outbuildings, and pastures, culminating in a steep, zigzagging ascent through the forest. At each hairpin, the stunning view of the Julian Alps unfolds.

Built in 1994, The Monument of Peace is a 75 ft-high stone tower, it serves as a "treasury of history and art" and a panoramic observation point with views of the Adriatic Sea, the Julian Alps, and the Vipava Valley.

It acts as a final point on the "Walk of Peace," honoring battles fought from the Alps to the Adriatic. It is a memorial to war suffering, the top observation deck is designed to represent looking into the future.

We will hike down and take trails and roads to passing by the town Kranjska Gora to our end point: Jasna Lake’s pristine turquoise water mirrors the surrounding steep mountain peaks. It is renowned for its transparency, while the water is generally very cold, it is ok to swim in this lake. The area features wooden piers, benches, a small library, a wooden diving platform, and bars/cafes. Take a photo with the bronze statue Zlatorog "Goldenhorn": a mythical ibex. According to legend, he lived in the high gardens of the Julian Alps around Mount Triglav, where he guarded a hidden treasure.

THE SOČA TRAIL - JULY 05

D4 - 14 mi Length - Elev. 1400 ft Gain / 2100 ft Loss AllTrails Map

The Soča river may be short, at 96km, but it is without doubt one of the most beautiful in the Alps. This section is the most spectacular part of The Soča Trail, crossing a series of suspension bridges and following the emerald-green Soča river passing through the woods and meadows of the Spodnja Trenta valley, and the peaks above Zadnja Trenta, waterfalls, rapids and narrow rocky gorges.

At Krovec scenic springs, the water emerges directly from the moss-covered boulders to flow across the trail and down into the river, by the end of the hike, we cross a stream and pass through a small flower meadow to a parking area and a bar.

FREE DAY - July 06

Check out the INDEPENDENT ACTIVITY LIST

VOGEL & ŠIJA SUMMITS - July 07

 D5 - 8 mi Length - Elev. 2500 ft Gain / Loss AllTrails Map

On this hike, we will start with a cable-car ride before climbing to the summit of Vogel via a stunningly beautiful, secluded valley. We will cross an open area through dwarf pine, alpine flowers, larch and spruce trees, past the “sirarna” where cheese and dairy products are made and sold (Bohinj cheese is famous in Slovenia). On the skyline is a dramatic notch on the craggy ridge, and further to the right along the ridge is the summit pyramid of Vogel.

We will take on a short scramble and scree; it is not difficult but it is exposed and protected by a steel cable. The view from the summit is spectacular. A side path from the valley makes a short diversion to Šija summit.

KORITA MOSTNICE + BOHINJ LAKE BOAT RIDE - July 08

D3 - 8 mi Length - 1200 ft Elev. Gain / loss AllTrails Map

This lovely walk follows the river Mostnica to the head of the Voje valley, then goes on to visit the waterfall at the end of the valley before circling back through the open planina with its wooden buildings and flower meadows, with wonderful views of the surrounding peaks. The river is genuinely ‘crystal clear,’ sparkling like diamonds and sometimes so clear that you must look twice to see if there’s any water. The falls are in two tiers, dropping into deep green pools deeply shaded by the trees.

After the hike, we will take an hour long boat tour on Lake Bohinj, with its pristine, turquoise, and glacial-fed waters, it is quieter, wilder, and more dramatic than Lake Bled. The tour in a panoramic electric (quiet) boat is the perfect way to admire the breathtaking alpine scenery.

SLEMENOVA ŠPICA, TAMAR, PLANICA - July 09

D4 - 12 mi Length - Elev. 2000 ft Gain / 4600 ft Loss AllTrails Map

This stunning hike in the Julian Alps offers new vistas and a sense of seclusion. The trail crosses alpine meadows, white limestone rock, and steep scree before reaching Slemenova špica. Descending through woods, you reach the Tamar waterfalls, known locally as Črna voda (black water). As we approach the picturesque Dom v Tamarju mountain hut, with a small chapel just in front of it, we can see Izvir Nadize Waterfall, the true source of the river Sava. The final part to Kranjska Gora via Tamar and the Planica valley offers breathtaking alpine scenery below Mojstrovka and Travnik’s north walls.

THE GRAND EXIT - JULY 10TH

Scattering to the Winds (and Different Zip Codes), or whatever exciting adventure awaits you down the road!

CULTURAL ELEMENTS

For those excited to learn about a new country, this LINK has everything you need to know about how much to tip, hut etiquette, map vocabulary, and essential mountain phrases.

CLIMATE

This is genuinely one of the best windows to be there — peak wildflowers, maximum daylight (nearly 15.5 hours), warmest lake swimming, and all huts open. You will almost certainly get some rain and at least one or two days where afternoon storms are dramatic, but a build-as-you-go mindset of starting early and being flexible will serve us well. The Julian Alps reward early risers.

- July is the hottest and wettest month in Lake Bled, It's also the month with the most sunshine.

- Sunrise approx. 5:30AM, sunset around 8:30 PM

- Lake Bled area average high temperature 77°F, nighttime low 55°F

- The lake water temperature reaches a peak of 75°F in July

- Mid-day temps at mountain huts ranges between 43°F and 66°F based on the altitude

- Valley-level hiking will feel warm & comfortable. In high alpine areas, warm layers are non-negotiable.

- The general rule is to plan to be done with exposed walking by early afternoon in mid-summer.

- Start hiking no later than 8 AM is a standard practice.

- For reliable weather forecast https://meteo.arso.gov.si/met/en/

FLIGHTS / TRANSPORT

There are no direct flights from Atlanta, estimated roundtrip cost in July to Ljubljana airport is 1000-1400 USD

The Fastest Routes (12 hours) via Zurich or Frankfurt with Carriers like Lufthansa. There are options with KLM, Air France, and United Airlines. Turkish Airlines (via Istanbul) offers the lowest cost but it’s longer transit time.

The best option for domestic transport to Lake Bled is to take a bus from Ljubljana or the airport to Bled Union (this station is a few minutes' walk to our accommodations).

Bus tickets can be booked only up to 30 days in advance: https://www.ap-ljubljana.si/en
