Itinerary:

The Wagon Train Trail is one of the "Big 3" trails to reach Brasstown Bald, the tallest mountain in Georgia.  The trail is an old road bed from Brasstown Bald to Young Harris, built by convict labor in the 1930s. The trail, noted for excellent winter views of the surrounding mountains, passes through hardwood forests populated with yellow poplars, birches, maples, oaks, hickories, black gums and numerous other species.

We'll hike from the trailhead at the Brasstown Bald parking area to the gate at the national forest boundary, then back to the top.  The total distance will be approximately 14 miles, with approximately 2900 feet of elevation gain.

While this will be my first time to hike this trail, I have reviewed numerous guides (and spoken with AOC veterans), which all describe the trail as very easy to find and follow.

Given the length of the trail and the amount of elevation gain, this hike is considered strenuous.  All participants should be in excellent physical condition.  You should have recent D4 and/or D5 hikes with the AOC, or be otherwise prepared to provide the trip leader with evidence that your fitness level is sufficient to complete this hike.

While we will want to enjoy the scenery around us, we will also keep a consistent and moderate pace throughout the hike, averaging 2.5 mph.  We will also take a break to eat lunch.

Please arrive early to the carpool to sign waivers, so that we can be on the road no later than 7:30.  If all goes according to plan, we will finish the hike around 3:30 or 4:00 p.m.  We will then have time to grab a bite to eat and return home at a decent hour.  However, everyone should be flexible.  This is not a good hike to attend if you have some kind of pressing deadline requiring you to return to Atlanta by a specific time.
