Itinerary:
Moderate to Strenuous

On Saturday we will backpack down past the Salt Rock overlook into this splendidly scenic valley, only about one mile and a bit and camp in the pine flats just past the ‘fork in the road’ in a big expansive area for us to spread out our tents. After setting up camp, we will hike off in daygear to view the upper, middle and lower Warden’s falls on the Tuckasegee River and any other adventure that time allows us in the day-perhaps the overlooks from Blackrock Mtn. Before returning to camp to set up for the evening festivities, which will hopefully include beautiful starwatching (pray for clear skies). Sunday we will wake up and enjoy the morning in leisurely fashion before packing up and walking out via the two waterfalls on Frolictown Creek, and enjoying the views from Salt Rock overlook one more time. Then we will leave this unforgettable valley and head back relatively early in the day (around noon -1pm latest). Depending on the groups desires we can visit and enjoy a day hike to three spectacular waterfalls on the Horsepasture River on the way back; a three-mile total moderate hike. Anyone wanting to enjoy each other company an extra hour, I will gladly stop at the Steakhouse Cafeteria in Walhalla, SC on the way back which has very low priced filling food.
There will be a mandatory pre-trip meeting on Thursday, May 26th to discuss maps and routes, expected weather and temperatures there; and equipment to bring-then time after to shop for food and things might need at REI Perimeter where meeting will be held.

Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.
One dinner (suggested non-smelly dehydrated food so as not to attract wildlife to join us dining)-also its very lightweight, trailsnacks, breakfast-instant food of your choice. Also bring the usual supportive hiking shoes, water containers and tent, sleeping bag, pad backpack and essential items for camping including flashlight-headlamps, campstove and fuel-personal toiletries including tp and trowel--see suggested list items for complete list.

The Panthertown Valley is a wilderness of uncommon beauty, but wild in its nature. The leader will bring a water filter for our primitive camping and snakebite kit for safety, though I hadnt experienced a rattler here yet (heard tales of sightings though) This is my favorite wilderness to camp in and explore, but be prepared for cool evenings with proper clothing for same and primitive conditions of wilderness backpacking-camping.

How to Get There:
Event Directions:Cashiers, North Carolina Park and Ride only From the park and ride lot we will travel north on I-85 to exit 1 in South Carolina to Hwy.11 north and up to Cashier via Highway 28 and 107 north. Trailhead is about five miles from Cashiers, NC.
