Itinerary:

Currahee!! 3 miles up, 3 miles down!

At the base of Currahee Mountain - circa 1942 - was an Army Training Grounds,  Camp Toccoa.   The 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment was one the handful of Army Units that trained there during WWII.   If this sounds familiar it is because the 2nd Battalion of the 506th PIR, better known as "Easy Company,"  was popularized in the HBO mini-series "Band of Brothers" and the battalion's commanding officer was known for making the men of Easy Company run Currahee "3 miles up, 3 miles down" quite often as a training exercise. If you haven't seen "Band of Brothers", well, now you have plans the next time an AOC hike is rained out!  Enough with the background, on with the hike.

We won't be running Currahee like the paratroopers of WWII did, we'll simply be hiking it. The hike itself is pretty much a dirt service road that leads up the mountain.  It's not a 'woodsy' hike but it will get your heart rate up and there is a nice view at the top.  And if you are a history buff and/or a fan of "Band of Brothers", you'll get to experience a training run of some of the finest soldiers of WWII.
So the daily summary is that we'll hike to the top, have lunch, hopefully talk about WWII (share any stories from you parents, grandparents, or great grandparents!!), head back down and then head home.

Rated D3 b/c of the elevation on the first part and the total distance. Currahee is a 3 miles up (of course!) with a 800 ft elevation change.

Carpool Cost: Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $56.80 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Notes:

This is not rain or shine. Winter hikes are miserable in the rain and if the weather happens to be icy/snowy the day before, I'll probably cancel for safety issues. Just keep your eyes open for the pre-hike email and we'll work it out.
