Itinerary:
Sick of hearing about all those adorable couples and all the sweet, romantic things they'll be doing for Valentine's Day? Well, let's make them jealous by enjoying a fun, adventurous singles weekend away on an island rich in beauty, history and tons of great, outdoorsy things to do! (Just kidding, couples, you know we love you too--of COURSE you can join us!)

We'll leave the Chastain Park & Ride at 6a.m. on Friday, Feb 11, so that we can beat traffic and enjoy as much daylight as possible once we get there.

We should roll into our campground by noon (or earlier, depending on whether we stop for lunch or not. My recommendation would be to stop at Gary's on 82 for some REALLY good BBQ on the way in.)

Although our site is considered "primitive," we'll have nearby access to running water as well as hot showers and flush toilets. Think luxury car camping. We'll be able to park right in front of our group site. Once we get set up, time to go do stuff! If the tide is out, we'll hop on our bikes (or just walk) over to the driftwood beach. Our campsite is pretty much across the street--maybe a10-15 minute walk. This will be a great place to explore at night, too. Lots of wildlife, plus these islands are considered to be haunted.

Both Jekyll and St. Simon's Islands offer a HUGE variety of things to do and see, as well as plenty of restaurants offering quality food, much at reasonable prices. Your trip leaders plan on bringing their bikes and encourage you to do so as well! There are quite a few safe, flat bike paths that will take us to exciting destinations like the Driftwood Beach, the old tabby house & graveyard, salt marshes, Sea Turtle rehab center, Christ Church & graveyard, Ft. Frederica, the lighthouse, cool shops & restaurants, etc. Bring your helmet, too. Those with bike racks and SUVs are especially encouraged to sign up!

Bike rental is available on the island ($5/hour, $8/4 hours, $11.50 all day-8pm) Experienced paddlers can bring their own gear if you'd like to tackle the cold water around the islands. Getting your boat there is up to you. You will need to understand paddling safety and the tides and currents in the area; inexperienced paddlers and swimmers die here sometimes. Take a buddy if you go. Alternately, you may want to visit our friends at Southeastern Adventurers for rental or tours. Oh, and horseback riding is available on the island, but it's pretty expensive.

*Note: There is a possibility that we may get a hold of a small trailer to haul bikes/gear. More details once we know who is bringing a bike. Expect to pay a portion of the gas costs if we use this trailer to transport your bike or gear.

The campground has a store with overpriced but useful items. Better to bring your own, but nice to know it's there. Both islands have grocery stores and restaurants. St. Simon's is quite built up, and Jekyll is less so. (For now, sigh, but that's changing.) Jekyll does NOT have anywhere to buy gas.

We will be able to have a firepit, so please bring money for firewood. It's usually cheaper and easier to just get firewood at the campground instead of hauling it from Atlanta.

Alcohol is also permitted at the campground, but bad behavior is not. The AOC encourages RESPONSIBLE drinking. We are not your babysitters. Although we'll be camping in the adult sites at the far end of the campground, we need to keep in mind that this is a family campground. They will have a bored guard patrolling in a golf cart and he has no problems telling us to shut up and go to bed, or worse yet, "Go home," which is their right. The good news is that if you don't want to go to bed, you don't have to. You can go to the beach, make all the noise you want and get a new perspective of the Driftwood Beach under a half moon. No, you're not allowed to sleep on the beach. If you do, you run the risk of being whisked out to sea if the tide comes in while you're asleep. You might die and that would suck, so don't even think about it! Oh, and it's illegal.

WARNING:
1-The raccoons and squirrels at this campground are among the most obnoxious, aggressive and cunning of ANY campground I've ever been to. You will need to keep your food & anything that smells like food OUTSIDE of your tent, and you will need to bungee your cooler shut with at least 2 bungee cords. If you don't, you can expect to find remnants of both your tent and food all over the campground. Note, it's a good idea to buddy up with someone on cooler space so we don't end up with 16 giant coolers to keep track of.

2-Be prepared to be uncomfortably cold at night and maybe on the beach. There's a chance we'll get mild weather, but there's a better chance that it will get extremely cold at night. A good hat, warm socks, gloves and 15 degree (or better) sleeping bag) will be your best friends. Balaclavas are also great, especially if it's really cold and windy on the beach. If it gets too cold, there are hotels nearby.
