Itinerary:

Providence Canyon is also known as Georgia's "Little Grand Canyon."  The massive gullies (some with a depth of 150ft) have interesting colors of pink, orange, red, and purple and make for great photos.  The gullies were caused by poor farming practices during the 1800s. Providence Canyon is also an ideal location to view night skies because there is virtually no light pollution.

We will start out Saturday morning at 8am from the Mansell Park and Ride to arrive in Lumpkin, GA and Providence Canyon around 11am.  We will then hike about 2-3 miles along the backcountry trail loop to our campsite over relatively flat terrain.  After setting up camp, we will continue hiking the backcountry trail along the edges of the canyon which will allow some great photo opportunities.  We will then have the option to explore the bottom of the canyon on Saturday if time permits or wait until Sunday on the hike out of camp.

Total hiking distance over two days will be approximately 12 miles depending on exploratory hiking.  This is a great backpacking trip for beginners.  Total distance with backpacks will only be about 4-5 miles. Note: there will be no bathrooms, water, or electricity at the campsite.

There is no water source near the campsite.  Bring plenty of water!

Dogs are most welcome. Your dog must be healthy, well socialized with unfamiliar people and dogs, and physically capable of hiking long distances.

Please be sure to bring extra water for your dog. There is no source of water in Providence Canyon and they will need lots of fuids too.

Please note that there will be several four legged participants at this event.  If you are not comfortable hiking or camping with dogs, this might not be the right trip for you.

The state park charges $9 per person for use of the backcountry site.  Payment will be collected by the trip leader at the carpool.
