Itinerary:

The Rich Mountains total 13,276 acres near Blue Ridge Lake.  Comprised largely of wilderness, Indian camp sites still exist on some of the upper ridges.  It is reported that Georgia's largest gold nugget came from a creek in this area.  However, I will leave it to another TL to post a gold panning adventure.

Starting at Deep Gap, we'll begin our hike by warming up on the Flat Creek Loop, which is an easy to moderate 5.8 mile walk along the southern slopes of Davenport Mountain and paralleling Flat Creek.  We'll enjoy views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, while enduring limited elevation gains.

We'll then transition to the greater challenge of the Stanley Gap Trail.  Initially traversing the ridges of Davenport Mountain, we'll subsequently climb Rocky Mountain before descending to Stanley Gap and the intersection with the Benton MacKaye Trail.  We'll then make a lollipop by following the BMT back to Rocky Mountain and re-trace our steps to Deep Gap.

The hike will total approximately 15.6 miles and about 2300 feet in elevation gains (as best I can tell from reading a book).  Your trip leaders have never walked this trail, so these are approximations based upon our trail guides.  As always, your trip leaders may contact you for additional information if you do not have an AOC resume showing D4 and D5 experience.

Naturally, after burning so many calories, we'll have to stop and eat something delicious and unhealthy on the way home!
