Itinerary:
April Wildflowers in the PocketThe Pocket of Pigeon Mountain in Walker County, Georgia is considered by many to be the finest wildflower site in Georgia based on the diversity and concentration of spring wildflowers. This site has large populations of Trillium decumbens and flexipies, masses of bluebells and celandine poppies, and lots more. The Pocket Trail is an easy 2.6 mi. loop.   Then we'll drive another 10 miles to the Chickamauga Creek Trail, a 6.3 easy-moderate loop, for more wildflowers. Total: 9 miles.  We're rating it a D4 for the mileage.  We'll hike it like a D3 though.

Here's a link to a wealth of info about wildflowers this area: http://uswildflowers.com/journal/?cat=4  The composite at the right shows just some of the April wildflowers.

Dinner: TBD

Our hikes are always social hikes - not fitness hikes, although fitness is required to hike 9 miles. This is not a hike for first timers. We walk an avg. of 2.5 mph and stop frequently to enjoy, explore, or just to let the back of the group catch up and have a minute to rest.

NOTES: 1) We have not hiked these trails before, but feel confident based on our experience (and guide books :) If you are not the type of person that can tolerate a bit of uncertainty - i.e. if you will panic and want to turn back, then we suggest you not attend. 2) Since we have no prior knowledge even of the trailheads, parking situation, etc., we will give preference to those who are willing to carpool. Anyone checking off "Meet at the Event" will be moved to the waitlist and added later if there is room. 3) Carpool cost: For vehicles with 3 or more passengers, we ask passengers to divide the actual cost of gasoline. If practical, drivers do not pay for gasoline on our trips.
