Itinerary:
Cumberland Island imagesThis is a relaxing camping trip at Sea Camp, on Cumberland island National Seashore, off the coast of south Georgia.  http://www.nps.gov/cuis/index.htm.  I have been here at this time of year, and typically the bugs are few, the temperatures have moderated and the ocean is wonderfully warm for swimming.  We will stay two nights on the island, in the camping site, "Sea Camp", which is about 1/2 mile walk from where the ferry drops us off.  Carts are made available to port gear to the campsite, and we recommend keeping it to a minimum amount of gear.  The campsites have men and womens bathrooms with cold water showers.  The campsite is about a five minute walk to the beaach via a boardwalk through the sand dunes.

Thursday, 9/29:  Travel from Atlanta to St Mary's GA.  Stay over night in a local hotel/motel.  There are many hotel/motel options.  Each person is responsible for these costs; we have plenty of time to coordinate sharing rooms and expenses.

Friday, 9/30, 8AM: After eating breakfast (on your own) and resuppling the ice in your cooler, meet at the ferry dock.  Check in.  Depart for Cumberland Island at 9am.  The ferry ride is about 40 minutes long; we'll be deposited on the inland side of the island.  We will check in with the park service, get our assigned spaces, listen to a short lecture, and then using the carts provided, take our coolers and gear to the camp sites.  At the camp site, we'll set up our tents.  Cages are provided to store food so that the raccoons cannot get to it.  No food is to be left out; raccoons may eat/attack it otherwise.

Friday and Saturday are open to wandering the hiking paths, visiting the ruins on the south end of the island, swimming, playing on the beach, and photographing.  The next time we "have" to be any where is Sunday morning.  However, as a group, we will plan to visit Dungeness on Friday afternoon or Saturday morning, and walk around the entire south end of the island, back up north towards our campsite.  As a group we will go to the beach after dark to view the stars and swim with the glowing zooplakten (optional, but highly recommended).

Sunday, Oct 2:  depart on the ferry at 10:15am.  Arrive back at the dock around 11am.  Unload the gear from the ferry boat, to the cars.  We will stop for lunch and drive back to Atlanta.  You can expect to be back in Atlanta by six.

NOTE:  As there is so much interest in Cumberland Island, you might consider making your own reservations.  The number to call is  877-860-6787, M-F 10-4.
