Itinerary:

With long, winding walkways, manicured gardens, flowers, shrubs, and mature trees, historic Oakland Cemetery, enveloped by our bustling city, is a refuge of serene green space, with exploding spring colors.  The cemetery includes (among other varities) dogwood, camellia, antique roses, seasonal bulbs, cherry laurel, oak and magnolia. The cemetery is large enough to complete a nice morning walk.

Oakland Cemetery is also architecturally stimulating, with many styles represented through magnificient carvings, stained glass mausoleums, large bronze urns, and massive monuments.

The cemetery also permits exploration of our past.  Twenty-seven Atlanta mayors, six Georgia governors, author Margaret Mitchell, golfer Bobby Jones, many Civil War dead, and other notable figures rest there.

This will be an easy Sunday morning 1.5 hour guided stroll and tour, entitled "Sights, Symbols, & Stories of Oakland."  The group can explore longer afterwards, if desired.  The cost of the tour is $10 (which is paid directly to Oakland, not the AOC), and supports restoration of the cemetery.  However, in return, we will receive a $5 certificate to Six Feet Under, a restaurant and pub directly across the street.  Since we will finish at lunch time,  those of us who are interested will follow our stroll with an optional gathering at the restaurant for food and fun.

Note:  We will each pay the tour fee to Oakland Cemetery personnel a few minutes before the tour begins.
