Itinerary:

This another in the Summit Sunset Series where we will enjoy sunsets from some of the finest scenic viewpoints in GA...all on or near mountain peaks.  If you've never had this experience, you don't know what you're missing, so time to find out...

The summer solstice this year in our time zone is at 1:16PM, so we should see the first sunset of summer.  This is the farthest north on the horizon that the sun sets all year and from this location, it drops almost directly behind Blood Mtn about 15 mi away (see pic above).

We did a Yonah afterwork hike last year and it worked well.  Sunset is at 8:50PM. Assuming we get on the trail by 7:15, that gives us about 1 1/2 hrs to hike the 2 mi to the top. We aren't going to race up there but we will be on a somewhat strict timetable and going to keep up a moderate pace. So this will be a D4...not a super intense one, but just make sure you are in solid D4 shape.

We will take a break at a rock outcropping for anyone who would like a shot at this very photogenic spot (see pic below).  At some point before we head down, we will visit the actual summit of Yonah..a peaceful clearing surrounded by a ring of trees.

We may linger up there for awhile after the sunset if the fading colors/clouds are especially nice.  Then we will head down which should take about 45 min and then about a 75 min drive back to the Park and Ride.  So figure we should get back at around 11-11:30 PM.

Total distance should be about 4 miles...about 1500' of total ascent.
